I was wondering if any of our members are near any of the 1,000 fires burning in California?

While I don't have the answer to your question, I thought I'd share this: WMS and KML Access - Remote Sensing Applications Center

If you've got Google Earth installed, download the .kmz file from the "Continental United States" section at the top of the page and open it in Google Earth. Zoom in on the West coast. It's a pretty amazing way to keep track of the fires.

THIS member is very close. They've closed the hwy I live on about 2 miles up from us but the closest fire is still 5 miles away. Ash is falling like snow here around our office in Paradise and they've suggested the east part of town start evacuating. We live 5 miles south of town. Other mandatory evacuations were put in place at 2 am for a town about 10 miles up from our place.

I'm going home soon to hook up the RV and load the pets. The winds are picking up and ashes are falling in Chico (15 miles to the west of Paradise).

We're monitoring a few websites and the local news and the fires in this area have gone from being a concern to "leave now" in the last 8 hours. The firefighter's blogs say it's a combination of winds and "a planned backfire".

We live in Butte County south of Paradise and a few miles west of Concow.

I'm in the Santa Cruz Mountains and, while it's been pretty quiet for the past two weeks, we sure had a run on fires for a spell. The whole Valley is choked with smoke still, and you can smell the fires constantly. I figure it's like smoking a pack a day...

Halfway between those regions, the Central Valley has been smoky enough to give everybody a sore throat. I've been sneezing. A couple of times I gagged and thought I had inhaled a spiderweb or something.

Mom (98) is on an oxygen bottle.

I don't see how you guys nearer the fires can survive.

Still hangin' at home. The evac line is now the hwy we live on, exactly at the intersection in front of us ... from the other side of the road and for about 10 miles north being evacuated, about 9000 people. Late last night the evac line was 5 miles north of us.

Air quality is running 350 (very unhealthy) and visibility is less than a mile. We've packed photos and important stuff into the RV, which is hooked up and ready to roll. Grab some animals and I can be outta here in 5 minutes.

I'm staying home today. We are able to monitor the local CalFire and sheriff radios via an online link so we've got current info. Now it's just watch, listen and wait.

It's taken me 30 years to carve a 300 ft defensible space out of our brushy and forested parcel.... but I'd prefer to not put it to the ultimate test.

I think 3rrl is in that neighborhood... his direct property probibly isnt at risk but im shure its "in his neighborhood"

3rrl lives maybe 150 miles south of here, however with ~350 fires still burning in the state (MUCH BETTER than the 1400 a week ago) he may have his own nearby fire. Plenty to go around, and more fun than usual with the daytime temps over 100 (111 here at our house yesterday).

Good luck to you all. I can't imagine how you live with all the stress involved in such a situation.

I have friends in Cazadero and worry about them, but so far they seem to be doing ok.
