TBNers in Northern VA, WV eastern panhandle...

and Frederick Co, MD. Not sure if this is the appropriate forum but here goes...

My wife and I are in the process of building our new home and we need a siginificant amount of fill dirt for our site. Does anyone in the area have a lead on some or know of anyone who needs to dispose of some fill? I haven't had much luck hunting any down but finding it seems to come down to word of mouth and some good fortune. We could easily handle 1000 yards or more.

IMHO, your best bet is to go to a nearby construction site and talk the project manager there...he may or may not be able to help you. They may be able to lose it in the current project, or have already promised it to someone...but it never hurts to ask. Also keep an eye on loaded trucks in the area, and find out where they are coming from...

That was the only way I was able to get the fill I have (about 8 tandem loads worth)...the guy gave me a "great deal" at only $25 per load "I usually charge more"...I'm sure he pocketed the cash, but I had no issues with that, it saved me money and it kept him from having to haul it far. Its not unusual to pay $200+ for a tandem load delivered in the area (i'm not too far from you).

Dirt is like gold in my parts. Expensive.

I'd check new home developers, those sub-divisions may be of particular interest.

As a metter of fact, so expensive, we moved to flatter land.

Give these guys a call. I know they have a stockpile in Savage, MD. Last time I used them it was $65.00 / hr hauling rate. Material and loading was free, but I had to use their trucks, go figure. They would probably cut you a better deal based on volume.

Thanks for the input gents. I've given up trying to do this on the cheap...with all the construction the demand for fill is keeping up with the supply. The best I've been able to come up with is $50/truckload, without actually driving all over the place scrounging every dirtpile I find.

It's tough to come by large quantities of dirt with all the building going on in the area. Especially now since they are doing the Rt. 9 project. They are using enormous amounts of fill on that project and they have the trucks to haul any free fill.

Looks like there's a lot of you guys in the eastern panhandle area.

I was down there yesterday for a job interview.

Nice area, but the real estate prices are a lot higher than I had expected!

If the rt 9 thing doesn't pay off, there is a company outside of Charlestown that does dirt and mulch. Check the valley trader, and the local papers they advertise there alot. There moving alot of dirt of the Hagerstown airport project from the dump. So I would try the local dumps, but I dont think the one in hedgesville is open that often. might also try some of the local contractor, like tinks in hedgesville, or panhandle homes in martinsburg.

There is a hauler in the scab papers that will haul 5 tons at a time, But I havent heard any good things about them.
