First time poster, been watching since I bought my 03 in August. Machine is used with about 290 hours. I am the second owner, first owner bought it down south. Well, while moving some gravel at our local BMX track, I could tell something wasn't right in the rear end. She barely climbed up onto my trailer. brought it to the dealer. Diagnosis; broken tranny/rear end case. $1900. Ring and pinion about $450. Total about $4000. I certainly cannot afford to put that kind of money into this machine. What should I do next? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. My stomach has been in knots since I heard this...Thanks so much in advance, Jason in Burlington CT

Did the dealer tell you what he thought caused it to break ? I know if the rear end housing bolts are not kept tight it will break housings on any tractor .

If the dealer is not offering no help i would look for a used housing if you could find one it may save some money. You might even find the rear end as a complete unit at a salvage yard.

There is a corolation between the price of gold, compact tractor parts and oil. At the moment I can't afford either. New parts are about 15% higher and who knows what your getting when you buy used. I don't know how they sell the used stuff for the prices they quote. It is just short of amazing. There are some nice old tractors for sale but getting parts may be a large problem. I'm sicking with the new.

I have given thought to parting it out. The case cracked in a place that to me does not look like a highly stressed area. It looks like a casting defect, but I'm no engineer. The dealer does not want to get involved with New Holland, as they didn't sell me the tractor, and its no longer under warranty. Can't say I blame them. Is it worth it for me to give New Holland a call myself? I don't even know where to start...

Can the case be welded?? If it can, hopefully the internals will align properly.

I don't know how much you can afford or think is wise to invest in it, but you might want to call around for different parts prices. I have found 15-20% variation at times between dealers, maybe try Messick or one of the other PA dealers. Can you find an independent shop to do the work or can you do it yourself? It will still be expensive but I think you may be able to get the cost down quite a bit if you have the time.

As someone else said maybe you can take it apart, have the case welded if possible, and then replace the damaged internals, having a shop set up the ring/pinion if you don't want to tackle that.

How has the tractor been used, just a loader and back blade? Was the previous owner running a backhoe or something heavy on it?

Sorry to hear of your bad fortune but take a deep breath and you may find a lower cost solution. Good luck.

tractor never had a hoe on it to my knowledge, but its obvious the machine has been used. It's not a trailer queen, but I don't think abuse could break it where it did. I'll bring her home and think about my options. Thanks for the input guys.

You can call New Holland, but I think you will find them not too helpful on an '03 machine, even with those low hours. I think you know your options and if you are convinced you don't want to spend more money, then parting the tractor out will probably be the most money for the parts. Broken tractors like yours are salvage. It's hard to accept, but swallow deeply and move on is my suggestion. Parting it out or fixing it is your decision. After it's parted out, what will you do? Will you still need a tractor like the TC?

I found them somewhat helpful after I abused them by calling every single day till I got some response.. Took a month of calling NH daily and my dealer daily.

I don't want to sound like an opportunist here, but if you decide on parting it out, i'm in the market for a TC24D engine. I'm considering picking up a project tractor that ran out of oil.

Or if anyone else knows a source of a reasonable engine for a TC24D.
