Hi I am a newbi to the TBN. I would like to thank everyone for the information that they posted on this site but I would like a little more (a little greedy I know):D I have recently purchased a used TC29 Hydro trans and noticed that it wont back up a hill that it will drive forward up. Is there a port that I can test pressures and what pressures should I expect because it sounds as if the hydro is bypassing when I try to back up the hill. Thanks for any info you can give me on this.

I don't know what the oil pressure should be on the drive. We had a link going a long time ago on the pressure for the hydraulics and Spencer made up a kit for testing and we mailed the kit around the country and eveyone tested the hydraulics.

Do you know when the last time the oil was changed? It is expensive to change out the hydraulic/tranny oil but worth it. Call you local dealer and see what he has to say.

I believe the trans fluid was changed aprox 50 hours ago. I will do asearch for the thread you mentioned and I will try asking the dealer and see what they say this weekend thank you for the reply.

I purchased my TC29D in 2000 and have had nothing but happy seat time ever since. A few small things have caused me to know my blue baby better, but the ride has overwhelmingly been a pleasure.

I noticed soon after taking possession I could not go backwards up a hill that I easily climb in the forward direction. I could hold the load and stay in one place, and for a few feet make the move in reverse, but I have never been able to accomplish that task. I agree, it sounds like it is in bypass, but I have no way of knowing for sure.

In questioning my dealer about the situation, he said it was normal and that there was nothing wrong with the system.

I have never been in a situation where I needed to do anything in reverse up a hill, so I have not worried about this situation.

General J:

Welcome to TBN and the Blue Forum :D! What range are you in when backing up? I have not had that problem (yet) in "1st"/low range. I think I will test mine to see if my "29" performs in a similar fashion. Jay

It is my understanding(I do not know for sure) that there are two relief valves in they hydro circuit, one on each side of the pump. It is likely that they are slightly different. It is also seems reasonable that the factory setting for the reverse would be lower(the tractor is designed to go forward), and it is likely the fittings are not as strong in reverse.

It is unlikely that you can test this circuit with commonly available equipment. The HST pressure is about double the normal hydraulic pressure, so you should be careful.

I have 1500 hours on my TC 29D. Owned it since new. Reverse never had the same ability as same range in forward. I just learned to drop to the next lower range if it quit moving in reverse. I believe what you are experencing is normal. Please remember when you back up and tractor begins to labor; back OFF the footpedal.

thank you for the help It does appear the condition is normal I only notice the problem in mid and high range. Low range has plenty of power I had a newholland 1620 hydro for many years and never noticed this condition If there is nothing wrong then I will just shift to low range when backing up hill.

My DX29 is the same. To back out of hole or something, I often need to go to low range when it would climb out forwards with no complaints. The relief valve doesn't scream or anything, it just doesn't move. The things are just not as strong going backwards as forwards.

You all got me concerned. I have a TC29D with some serious hills to mow. I can't remember having any trouble backing up my hills. I will have to go out and see if I have the same trouble as you guys.
