My fil has a early 2000's tc33 hydro he has been complaining that the whining noise from the trans has been really loud. He has changed the fluids and filters with new holland parts and replaced a suction hose but it is still loud and doesn't want to move when it's cold until it warms up for quite a while. It has about 2500 hrs on it used for lawn mowing , snow blowing , and loader use. Does this thing have a suction strainer in the trans ? If it does it probably has never been cleaned and I'm hoping this is the problem. Any input will be welcomed . Thanks

Nature of the beast to hear at least some 'mechanical' noise from HST (whine), and btw Terramite is a bold standout in that category.

Cold fluids cause slow performance in all hydraulics, so dropping down a range is indicated to get the 'juices' flowing. In our shop (climate-controlled) it was SOP to 'warm' up the hydro for feeds on the grinders (OD/ID, cutter, surface, etc .. for ~1/2hr). Noise will be less when fluid is warmer, but there's a lot of variety in brands/systems/sizes and some is sure to be heard.

As we age, our hearing loses frequency reception/perception, and it's not always just the highest Hz we lose. FIL got hearing aids? They could be amplifying certain frequencies. I wear earplugs by default when in the seat, and just for the engine noise. And that Terramite, ... the whole nabe hears me when 'traveling' around the yard.

I'd also make sure the sleeve over the front driveshaft has plenty of grease. These are known to cause a squeal if they are too dry.

I went and looked at it today it's definatly hydraulic and it way to loud to be normal, it sounds like pump cavitation , the fluid is full, and he says if it's out in the cold overnight and you start it and let it warm upf for a while it won't move or it barely will, he has to keep it in the heated garage in the winter. All the filters have been changed at least annually. I didn't see any where on the trans housing that looks like it would be a cover for a suction screen.

Does he have a service manual? If not send me your e-mail address in a PM.

First question, is it a cold weather issue (below 40) or is it all temperatures? If it is all temperatures, then I would suspect a blockage or screen issue. If it is below 40 then I would suggest a viscosity problem with your transmission fluid. Some lower priced multi-purpose tranny fluids are higher viscosity than what you would want to use in colder temperatures. I get some whine with my TC 33D but the temperature is below 15. My solution after starting is to engage both pto's and with the range selector in neutral, put in a little hydrostat pedal forward and engage the cruise for 15 to 20 minutes. I also put a piece of cardboard over the tranny cooler ahead of the radiator. Good luck!!!

I called the dealer and they said there is no screen before the filter, but it sounds like a blockage and to pull the filter and filter mount off the transmission housing and check for blockages. The dealer said it should be 20w oil , I don't remember what Wieght oil the bucket in my fil garage says but I will check it out when I go back over. His garage was probably 50* when we started it to day and it was whining pretty loud , exspecially when he ran the loader hydraulics

Friend bought 99 model tc33 had been sitting up for 3 years. Got it started pretty easy but loud squealing noise. Changed filters and hydraulic oil still the same. So a mechanic of mine and I put the tractor on blocks and we determoned the noise with stethoscope was coming from shifter box for 4 wheel drive. 1st took 4 wheel drive shaft off. While still blocked up started and put thru all 3 ranges. No noise. So we took off box for shifter cleaned it put in New fluid in it and worked perfect. I think it was hung between 2 and 4 wheel drive. Simply take front drive shaft off and drive it and see if noise stops. Hope it works for you. Good luck.

My HSTs all whine noticeably louder in 4WD & I tend to engage it only when needed. Can't rule out gear noise too as when engaged front and rear wheels are literally fighting each other because of the way fronts are 'geared' to go a tad 'faster'. I've had 'gear' vs HST tractors (JD) and there is always some whine, esp if gears are straight-cut vs helical.
