New Holland TC 40A
I have been looking to trade up for the past year. I really want a TC 40, but I found a great deal on a TC 35A. The 35A is $2,000 cheaper than the TC 40A. I know both tractors use the same frame, so would I notice 5hp? I will be using the tractor to maintain a gravel drive and to pull out a few stumps. I am also going to get a 16LA FEL. I currently have a TC 30 and I like it but I want a larger tractor.

Thanks

The TC40 has one more cylinder and is a few more pound heaver then the TC35. The TC40 will have a little more low end torque for things like pulling a BB or brush hog. Will you notice the 5 HP difference, if any it will be very slight.

My .02. Is 5 more HP going to do you much better than your tc30? If you get the 40, your getting a 33% increase in HP. With the 35 your getting half that. Thew 35 isn't much of an upgrade, to me. They both will basicly do the same work though. The 40 is a smooth running engine, and since I have one, well...

I know 5 hp is not a lot, but the class III Boomers have almost if not twice the FEL capacity as the TC 30 7308fel. The class III also has a much larger frame and about 800-1,000lbs on the TC 30.

With the TC40A, you gain 5 horsepower, about 250 lb FEL lift capacity, and about 300 lb lift capacity at the 3PH. You can also run larger implements at the PTO. Is that worth $2000? You will have to decide, but I think that's a lot to pay for the gains. Maybe you should try both and decide.

Jim that would be a interesting test.. the 35, 40, 45 all have the same size/flow hydralic pump.. wonder why they would list the lifting capacities different if the pump & hydralic cylinders are the same on all 3 models.

I thought the TC35 had a lower running pressure hydralic pump than the 40 or 45. I know the 40 & 45 does have a higher lift capacity with the 3 point then the 35.

TC35 .... 2025 lbs
TC40 & 45 .... 2330 lbs

Ken, the pumps are identical. The hydraulic relief pressure is set less on the TC35s. It's an adjustment under the right-hand side of the operator's platform that is done by adding/removing shims. That reduced pressure is responsible for the reduced lift of the FEL and 3PH. I think it's maybe 2200 lb instead of 2500 lb...don't remember exactly the number.

Also, if you go to the Illustrated Parts Manual, you will see there are some different components in the rear differential/gearbox for the TC35. A NH tech once said they were actually smaller. I checked and found different part numbers, but of course, I've never actually seen the parts. The TC40 and TC45 have the same part numbers.

I still am not sure that's worth $2000 for the difference.

Gentlemen,
I faced this same issue back in December and settled for the TC-35A and spent the $2000 on implements. My major deciding factor was that I was mostly using the tractor for FEL work; mostly pallet fork stuff. If I was doing ANY bushhogging at all, I would have selected the TC-40. The TC-35 has performed flawlessly and I am very satisfied. My .02. Good luck!
