My TC 40 D has began to cut-off the engine when I get off to do something. It does this even with the parking brake on and the hi-lo lever in neutral. My dealer wants to take it into their shop to fix what should be a minor repair. The worst part is that they are behind and will leave me without a tractor for a undetermined length of time. I need to find a temporary fix until I can do without my tractor for an extended period of time. I figure there is a switch under the seat that could perhaps be unhooked temporarily. If anyone has any experience with this, I would greatly appreciate any advice. It sure is a pain having to crank the engine several times I hook/unhook implements.

I think there's a switch on the gear lever, parking brake, and seat. Are you sure it's the seat switch? Maybe take an ohm meter and check the switches, if you find a bad one your dealer should let "you" replace the switch and return him the bad one under warranty.

My 45d has the little switch under the seat. I've thought about bypassing it, just because it's a nussiance. I think it would be as easy as cutting the wires to the plug and twisting them together. If I did it, I would leave a long enough pigtail on the plug, just in case there was a need to reconnect the switch again. If I wanted to try it, without cutting the wires, maybe use a jumper wire to jump the plug wires without cutting anything.

crackpot,

You can pull the plug attachment that plugs in under the seat and insert a jumper (a wire with the insulation stripped off of each end) and see if that works. The dealer had my TC40D jumped that way when they added my mid PTO, I guess so they could run the PTO without being in the seat. Also, maybe try moving the range select lever slightly in either direction.

Good Luck

Sounds to me that the problem is in the brake switch or shifter switch. (You know the seat switch is working.) If I was going to bypass one I would bypass one of these. Figure out the bad one and bypass that one. If the brake switch is the problem and you bypass it then the tractor would still shut off if you fall off the seat with it in gear. It would not shut off if you bypass the seat switch. If you have to bypass the shifter switch you would be able to get off the seat with it in gear but only if the parking brake is on. (If the brake works good it should stall if you try this.) I would also check the adjustment and connections on both switches.

Crackpot, get yourself two flat spade connectors and crimp them on each end of a 2" piece of wire. Disconnect the switch under your seat (located between the two springs on the flat platform when you rotate your seat forward). Put a spade connector in each slot of the connector you have in your hand when you disconnect the switch, and you have jumpered around your seat switch ( the switch would normally be closed with you in the seat). After that, look for a broken or loose switch near your emergency brake and your range selector. One of these is your problem. I do not recommend cutting the wires going to your seat switch, since it is so easy to bypass. I have done it to my tractor since the first week I owned it./w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif

csaw. the adjustments on the brake and range shifts are pretty easy. Take a look underneath the tractor and ensure they're both working. Also, the wires hang down a little so be sure nothing has snagged and damaged or disconnected one of them.

Give djradz a gold star! Actually, you all helped me gain a better understanding of how the system works, and what to do if I have trouble in the future. Today was the first time that I have been able to get out and try the tips that you all gave me [ I have Multiple Sclerosis]. I was going to crank the engine first to make sure it would cut off when I got off the seat. While waiting for the pre-heater light to go off, I noticed that the parking light was not on, even though the brake was locked. Since I knew the brake light was working when I used it last, I checked underneath the parking brake lever first. The wire which plugs into the switch had come loose and was hanging down for any dummy to see! I snapped the two back together and now I have a parking brake light and a tractor I can get off of and it remain running! I guess it was still partially connected when the brake light was still functioning but the motor was shutting off. Sure am glad I asked you guys before I let the dealer take it in! They were going to pick it up and bring it back at no charge [two 75 mile round trips]. Could have been a slightly embarrasing event! At any rate, I really appreciate all the help. I hope I can return the favor someday, even though it's obvious I don't know much about this new stuff [safety devices]. I do have a little experience with welding, although the last time I was certified was over 20 years ago. If I can be of any help, just holler, because I'm sure I'll be calling on you all again.

Crackpot, you should register.
