TC 40 first and third problems

My new (to me) TC 40 was well used when I bought it about a month ago and I have been spending as much time fixing broken lights and hydraulic leaks as I have spent working (playing) with the tractor. One of the small things wrong with it is that it doesn't like staying in first or third gear. It doesn't "pop out" like a truck with a bad syncro, but feels like the linkage is bound up or part of the dash is interfering. It will go into those gears, but not as easily as second and fourth. Anyone else have a similar problem or suggestion on what to look for.

I don't have a manual shift transmission, but I do have a repair manual. It says to gain access to the shifter by removing the cowling on each side below the dash. You might get away with just removing the right side since the shifter is on the right and the shuttle is on the left.

Remove the two visible bolts on the operator platform and two more on the back side of the firewall for each half-panel (after raising the hood). Carefully disconnect the ignition switch wires and the panel should come completely out to give you access to the shifter. Either lube the shifter shaft or adjust the support plate up and down so that all gears easily engage.

I'm assuming the problem is yoiur shifter and not the transmission. If it's the transmission, that's a whole different issue. I hope it's the shifter just binding for 1st and 3rd.
