When looking at my operators manual there is some confusion on my part regarding the lube chart. I am having difficulty in understanding just what New Holland wants lubed every 50 hours by looking at their picture (see attachment)
The following 4 points are what I question.
Can anyone shed a bit of light on these four points for me?

#19 power steering cylinder
#22 Pivot shaft
#21 drive cover shaft
#27 Super Steer axle (mine is so equipped)

This is the second lube chart that New Holland furnishes. (see attachment) Can they possibly mean left and right steering cylinder bushings items 5, 6, 7, and 8 when they ask for #19 power steering cylinder lube?

When they ask for the pivot shaft to be lubed #22 can they be referring to item 11 which is the pivot bearing on the SuperSteer models?

I have only the first chart and its impossible to tell. I was doing this yesterday afternoon and carefully poked around the underside of the tractor locating grease fittings w/ the manual. I think I got them all but who knows. The second chart you posted seems alot more instructive as it roughly locates the fittings.

The PS cylinder is the bit that is hooked to the steering linkage...it will have hydro hoses running to/from it. It runs parallel and behind the fron axle. No clue about the pivot shaft...maybe its the bit thats bringing power to the front axle. I think the drive cover is the bit that covers the drive line to the front axle. Mine has a couple fittings on it. Not sure about super steer as mine isnt fitting w/ that.

Jimg I'm suspecting that the first chart is for the standard tractor and the second is for the D series w/SuperSteer but I would like to be sure. My last tractor had a hidden grease fitting on the water pump that I was not aware of and as a result I lost a pump at 200 hours. Hoping someone w/SuperSteer might steer me in the right direction. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

IM going to swing by my dealer this afternoon for a part and will ask then. I have a feeling theyre going to recommend a shop manual for details beyond the owners manual. Ill let you know what I find though.

Last night when I visited my dealer the parts guy grabbed a shop manual for me to look thru. Its organized like most car repair books and theres no one place to find all the lube pts. So I asked one of the techs who seemed not too sure exactly what should be lubed or where the fittings were located.

NOTE TO ALL: Remember to lube especially heavy the zirk at the front of the 4wd drive shaft just behind the front axle, just in front of where the shaft cover enters. Not sure where all this grease goes, but 30 to 40 pumps of the grease gun is not too much. Most of the grease just seems to disappear, but a little may come out of the front side. With the old Ford/NHs, problems didn't occur until hundreds and sometimes even thousands of hours had been put on the tractors, so if you've neglected to grease this point adequately, it still may be some time before you start to have problems.

The first evidence of problems usually would be a slight groan (not quite a grinding sound) when pushing anything heavy in reverse.

Direction came from the NH dealer service manager, back when I had my Ford/NH 1720 and again when I discussed it with them recently on my 40D. They said to pump until it came out the front, but many times it really never did or only just slightly appeared and never really oozed out. They said so many pumps didn't hurt anything and this was one location where it was much better to have too much than too little. Not sure about supersteer models, but the front drive is pretty similar between the 1520, 1720, 1920, TC30 and all Class II and III Boomers.

Jimg thanks for the extra effort! I am still a believer that the lube charts for the standard axle vs the SuperSteer axles overlap. I crawled around under my TC-40D/SS and I am satisfied that I didn't miss any zerks. It's funny that the pros are in a fog about this lube procedure also.

Then again maybe they know more than they are letting on.
