Hello, I am finally just about ready to pull the trigger on a TC 40-D w/attachments (fel, backhoe, mmm, landscape rake). I will be using this machine for my property maintenance side business. I will be mowing a public school soccer & baseball playing field (6 acres) while also hiring out for small backhoe work etc. My question is since the mowing is wide open without a lot of tight turning, should I go with the r-4's? and does anyone have a tractor of this size with turfs and how do they hold up with loader work. I know turfs are sometimes thinner walled tires. The dealer did not have any TC-40's in stock with turfs, does anyone have pictures w/turfs? The brouchure doesn't give an indication of how far the wide rear tires stick out.
Thanks for the help.
Peter

I run a TC35D with R-4s and do mow with it. I'm careful and don't have any turf problems unless its really wet.

My guess is that with a MMM and a backhoe, your tire type will be the least of your problems. You aren't planning on leaving the backhoe attached while mowing are you? How about trailering your tractor. The class three is pretty big and if you get a FEL, BH, and MMM you will need a really big towing rig to properly handle all of that. I think I would have chosen a Class II instead of a Class III for these jobs, but then I don't know all you are planning to do. I think the turfs would surely be fine for everything except some loader work. You need R4s or R1s to get enough grip to push that 72" bucket into anything except loose sand or gravel; however, if you load the turfs, you might have enough traction, but then you are gonna really compact the turf on your ball fields. It almost sounds to me like you need to invest in two sets of tires.

I know I haven't been a lot of help with your question, but you have a pretty tough decision and I'm not sure which way to tell you to go. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Peter I can't give you any advice on the turf tires as I have never owned any. My first tractor had ag tires and was great for doing everything except mowing. The ag tires were too aggressive for the turf and I was always tamping it or rolling it down afterward.

I went to R-4s on my TC-40D and they seem to handle the loads of the FEL and backhoe nicely. I also opted for wheel weights and a weight bar as a counterbalance for when I am using my pallet forks.

When I want to mow I strip the wheel weights, (something you can't do with filled tires) 3-point weight bar, FEL, backhoe, and attach the 3-point finish mower. As long as I don't get crazy in the turns the tires do a good job handling the turf. But if I get a bit wild using the SuperSteer they will dig in like the ag tires on a turn.

Hope some of this information helps you in some small way. I think if you can get by the trailering issue you will love the TC-40D. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for all your input. I plan on using a 10,000gvw trailer and 3/4 ton GMC pickup to transport the new tractor. Per GMC, the truck should handle the tractor weight fine. Because most of the mowing is wide open, I may initially go with the R-4's and try dropping the tire pressure slightly when mowing. If I have any problems the first season, I'll invest in the turfs. My garage is set up pretty well to change tires over fairly quickly.
Thanks again for your help. If everything goes right I should be purchasing the tractor mid to late Feb. Will post when I get it.
Peter
