Hi Greg; Welcome to TBN. I may be able to answer your question. I've had two TC35's. The first was the 12X12, and now I've got the DA. I also used the 12X for baling hay last year for a day. Worked fine for that, basically it was set and forget engine speed and ground speed. With the DA with a hydro, I think it would be a little more difficult to get the proper speed combination, at least with a square baler.
For hay, I'd get the 12X. For loader and anything else, the hydro is the way to go IMO. The 12X seemed to like to grind every so often when changing directions alot. That translated into short trans life to me. That's why I'm riding a DA now. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Greg,

I have the 12x12 on my TC35, and I have never regretted it. I'm not the most coordinated guy in the world, and I like to set my throttle one speed. The shuttle shift is effortless for shifting from forward to reverse. A few hours of practice, and It becomes practically automatic. Using the gas pedal on rough ground only results in lurching and nearly snapping my neck. I don't know if the pedal on an HST model would be any smoother. Maybe the HST "crusie control" would work the same.

Reliability is another factor to consider. Although hydros seem to be solid and reliable, I wouldn't think they would be quite as reliable as gears. I would guess they are at least a little more expensive to fix than a manual clutch and gears too.

now i have a tc 45 with hydro. i like it for mowing and it doesn't give any problems by hay making.
but maybe i will take my next with a manuel.

BTW: what is the best : turf tires or R4 tires
for mowing the most of the time on dry underground and a bit for transport (and hay making)

Greg,

R4's are great for everything except soft wet areas, where traction is the worst of all common tires. If you take a lot of road trips, R4's are by far the best. They are rugged, stiff, and can withstand bumps and punctures better than the others. They are the best for serious FEL work.

Adding weight to R4's doesn't help traction very much if at all. Reducing pressure to minimum can help a little with the traction and rough ride. Add pressure back for roading and FEL work.

Turf tires ride well, get maybe a little better traction that R4's. They wear faster than R4's. They cut easier and puncture easier. They're not so great for heavy FEL work. Personally, I would only buy turf tires for a dedicated finish mowing tractor.

Greg,

I have a TC35A with 12 x 12 Synchro Shuttle Shift. I would not trade it, but I have never driven a hydro, and the tractor the TC35A replaced was a straight manual, 4 gears foward and 1 in reverse. I do a combination of work with it, both loader work and mowing, along with other duties like transporting wood in the bucket and pushing out multi-floral bushes, etc.
The gear tractors have a slight bit more power at the PTO than the hydros in the same model. I know others here will say it is not worth mentioning, I think in the TC35 it is 29.6 in the gear and 29.1 in the hydro, but it is a slight advantage when operating a PTO driven baler.
That is my 2 pennies worth.

I have that same 12x12 SSS on my TC40A. I just passed 50 hours on this tractor, and like the transmission just fine. My previous tractor was a '99 NH 1920, also with the 12x12. No problems with the transmission in it either. Shifts smooth, and sure is nice having enough gear choices to have just the right gear for what you're doing. My primary use for my tractor is bush hogging, with the occasional tillage, grading, and loader work.

In all fairness, I have to say I've always been partial to gear transmissions, so maybe I haven't given the hydros a fair shake. I have used several hydros of different brands, but just don't like them much.

My two cents worth, and worth everything you paid for it...
