Tractor
TC40DA
Just a curious question. I use my TC40DA on my 77 acres. I never considered a TN. I love my tractor. What is the advantage of the TN series? Are they tougher in the same HP range? There are brief moments when plowing, mowing some hills, bucket work when I wished I had more weight to the machine. Thanks for the input.

Where bigger is better, the TN will shine: more weight, more hp, more hydraulic flow, built stronger, more cost for the basic tractor and it's attachments & implements.

Where small and nimble with a hydrostatic transmission as an option, the TC will win.

Essentially, I'd say the TC is a utility tractor and the TN is an ag tractor. They both have some crossover gray areas to that description though. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm wondering how much of my trouble might be slippage due to my tires? I have the industrial or R4's (?). I wonder if going to an ag tire would help. They look so much more aggressive, but I've never been on a tractor with one. I do a lot of plowing and pulling and have not been comfortable coming down the dirt/leaf road in rainy conditions. May be cheaper than getting a whole new tractor!

I own a TN75. I have a sizable piece of ground, 296 acres, so I feel that I need a fairly substantial tractor. I have owned smaller tractors, but for me bigger is better. Like you I do a lot of plowing. I think you probably need ag tires with liquid. Your TC would then be more of a workhorse and maybe you wouldn't have to dream of a bigger tractor. Just a personal preference; I'd rather have more than enough power. Guess it's just the Tim the Toolman in me, arf, arf arf; or is that arg, arg, arg. If someone knows how to spell it, please post.

I think R1s would definitely give you more traction. Since your tractor is a hydrostatic like mine, I also think your real limit will end up being the transmissions 5000 psi relief valve.

If you get into low-turtle and have enough traction, you will definitely stall the transmission. Mine stalls regularly when I'm doing loader work, but that is with a lot of downpressure from curling the bucket and cutting fresh dirt. I think the pressure on the front tires added to the rears causes the transmission to stall.

I think Kensfarm has ag tires on his Class III, so you might check with him on how they perform. You are right that they sure are a cheaper option than buying another tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i deffinately agree. There's nothing more frustrating than being on a tractor that's just too small for the job...

If I had 77 acres, I would definitely be looking for a big ag tractor. Heck, if I worked a lot of it, both tractors may even be needed. One can't have too much land and too many tractors, I guess.

The R-4s are a definite disadvantage in you need more traction. Do you have ballast or any weight added?

I have a loader on the front, and #250 on each rear tire. I have 77 acres, but only about 30 in fields. I imagine I'll do more and more in the fields as time goes on. I'll explore the tires option some more I guess, as I'm no position to buy a tractor. Also, I don't plow a ton, but probably 6-10 acres/year with lots of mowing. It's hilly however, and the stability of a heavier tractor would be welcome. And it's rainy and slick a lot...at least lately.
