New Holland TC18
I would like to put chains on the rear wheels of my new holland tc18, but the tolerance is too close. I have a huge hill and need (even with 4wd) chains in the winter time to get up the hill and push snow. I have been told by one person that you can turn the back rims and tires inside out and then chains will fit...has anyone tried this or have another sulution? Is chains on front wheels a possiblity also? Thank you.

What type of tire do you have? I have the R-1 ag tires,9x16, on the rear and they are dished out, "turned inside out" as you said. There is plenty of room for the chains I have. The R-4's may be larger.

When I priced chains (most aggressive they sold) for my 24D the chain guy said that you shouldnt run them on the front as it will cause undue wear on the front axel/components. It looks to me that they should fit on my R5s w/o a problem. jimg

Thanks for the info. I have the turf tires and it sure looks like there would be room if they are dished out. Will give it a try.

I run both my turfs (R3) and industrials (R4) dished out - Widest stance. Tractor runs great & it is a more stable position. I run chains on the rear R4s in the winter. I need them to be able to plow uphill. You'll love the chains, makes all the difference in the world.

Hazmat,

Thank you so much, it is settled, I will do it. Do you have any suggestions on specific chains for the turf tires.

I've got the Duo-Grip Tire chains that I use with my R4s. I bought them from tirechains.com (Click Link for picture) I don't think the UPS guy was happy with me - two boxes that weighed 50#+ each!

The other options are ladder chains. I'd recommend the ones with cross bars every 2 links vs the 4 links for smoother riding.

Some of the chains are available with spikes which offer great traction on dirt roads but would tear up pavement. Known as V-bar at tirechains.com (click for another pic)

I can't remember the size of the Turf tires off the top of my head, but I know they are shorter & wider than the R4s. They may not make a Duo-grip for that size turf.

The reason I chose the duo-grip was so that the chains wouldn't fall between the lugs on my R4s (not an issue on the turfs). Also due to the geometry of them, presumably they have better sideways traction - keep you from sliding down hill. That said, they are a bumpy ride compared to the ladder chains I had on my garden tractor.

I also recommend the spring adjusters

If you do a search here on tire chains you'll find plenty of reading.

Good luck.

Steve,
Did you price chains at Chappells? For your tire I think theyre less expensive ($150 for the back tires). This would be for the most aggressive chain. jimg

Jim

Chappell had square cut roller ladder chains available, but they were $177 for the 4 link (less cross links - bumpier ride). See this thead for more info. "roller" tire chains 2 link chains were going to be about 2X cost.

The Duo-grips were about $150 + shipping.
