I thought this topic would already have been covered but a quick search turns up nothing directly related. I've got a TC24D w/ R4's, rear mount blower, and FEL. I've been using it for clearing my driveway and parking area and although it works really well w/ the blower ...traction stinks w/ R4's on a slick slope.

I went to look for chains and our local Pewag dealer offers a beautiful set but clearance is a major issue. It looks like there's barely more than an inch clearance between the inside of the tire and parts of the tracktor. The wheels appear to be evenly offset so I doubt that swapping the rears around would accomplish much ...which is a real bummer.

Any of you put chains on your class 1 w/ R4's? Specifically, my tire size is 12 -16.5. As deep as the lugs are on this tire, I'm sure std ladder chains would get lost, eh?

Here's a pic of the Pewag chains I've been looking at and hoping to get.

The Pewag dealer said "well on my Deere I just adjust the axles in or out to 6 different widths. You can probably do the same".

I have no clue what he's talking about and looked all over the axle assy to see if I'd missed some simple adjuster. Nooop. Only thing I can think of is a spacer of some sort but I don't know where I'd get one or even if they're offered commercially.

Suggestions appreciated.

Legion,

You seem to have about the same clearance that I do with turfs on the TC24D. There has been discussions here (I seem to remember both of us involved) about dishing the tires out. Even says to do that in the manual as the only "adjustment" to overall width and added stability. My turfs are 31x13.5-15 and there is no way they could be mounted dished in. So the photo shows mine with the max clearance available. Looks to be about 1 1/2 inches from frame to rubber and my chains don't hit. I did have to trim the inner extra links off or they would keep banging the ROPs base/frame.

Another thing you will need to keep an eye on is the clearance between the chains and the sway bars. You need to keep them tight or the implement, especially like the heavy blower, will swing them right into the chains, makes quite a noise and unpleasant binding jar through the tractor. I'll send another photo of that in a minute.

Once they are on, you will love the chains. Not sure if they will move much on the R4s, on the turfs there is so much surface area that they settled in and haven't moved around on the tire at all, even in high gear.

Good luck - Brad

And one of the sway bars. Photo is with the blade resting on the floor. When traveling with an implement raised in the up postion, those sway bars are even closer to the spinning chains!

I have a TC24d with R4's also. I was tired of the 3 pt links hitting the tires, so I move the tires around. I have 1 inch more space than you do.

Ding ding ding ding ding!!!

We have a winner.

If you picked up an inch w/ R4's that would seem to run counter to all I've heard on this topic before ...primarily that the dish in / dish out appeared to be the same. I never tried it myself, I just took a good gander and the info seemed to be correct.

Don't know if you're refering to an inch on each side or an inch overall, but either way ...I'm in.

Thanks for the post, pekabu and you too Brad, particularly for the pics. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
