New Holland TC24D
I have lightly used TC24DA that has developed a problem stalling out when warm. The engine will idle fine for some time, then as I increase the RPM the engine will begin to sputter and the RPM drops for a short bit. It sometimes picks back up but then will drop down again. This may happen several times before it completely stalls out. I replaced the fuel filter and purged air from the fuel line but the problem remains. Any help to diagnose the problem or the next step I should take would be much appreciated. This is the first time I'm posting so please forgive me for any incomplete information or forum protocol failures. I prefer not to have to haul it into the dealership. Thanks

After you changed the fuel filter, have you been able to rev the tractor up all the way to max RPM at all? Or does it just stumble and want to die out?

Also, how did the old filter look when it came out? And was there any water or sludge in the filter housing?

When you had the fuel filter bowl open did you check to see if the fuel was free flowing correctly from the tank? It is just gravity feed from the tank to the filter housing but you should have a good strong steady flow of fuel if you open the shutoff at the fuel fill. Some times you can get some stuff in the tank & it will restrict flow of fuel to the filter, tractor will start but not run for long....

If you don't have good fuel flow you can usually just flush the fuel line & it will start flowing fuel correctly again.

I didn't check, but will. Do I need to be cranking the engine during the test or will the gravity from the fuel tank above be sufficient to create the stream? Thanks for your help

Yes, I was able to get the revs all the way up. Onces the stumblin starts it harder to get the revs up. The ability to rev the engine is very intermittent. The old fuel filter was clean. There was a tiny amount of debris in the cup. No water or sludge. The filter was changed only maybe 40 hours (run time) ago.

No, don't crank the engine.... You should have a really good strong steady flow just from the gravity feed from the tank.

You can even just pull the fuel ine going into the filter housing to check it, but if you do that be prepared to knink the hose to stop the flow & have something to catch the fuel....

dlctcg, thanks I'll make an attempt at checking the flow.

I drained the tank through the fuel filter. The stream was fine. I captured the diesel in a clean pail and got some residue as you can see it the bottom of the pail. Don't know if this is enough to prevent the flow. The fuel filter itself is clean. There were some small particles in the fuel cup.

I'd dump that in a clear cup or bottle to get a better look from the side,
It could have a big layer of water on the bottom.

The color looks off to me too, could just be the picture or container

I just noticed that's a 5 gallon bucket, lol. If you had some kind of clear container to put all of that fuel in... or maybe a few smaller clear containers

If it was flowing good that was not your issue... you would notice it long before you emptied the tank.

From your description it really sounds like a fuel problem... I see you mentioned "I replaced the fuel filter and purged air from the fuel line".... Is there any chance you have air in the lines to the injectors? You can bleed those also by building up pressure in them & then loosening the nut right at the injectors, if you do it slowly you can sometimes see the air bubbles being released. If you try this, do only one line at at a time & make sure you tighten them back up.
