Having a lot of difficulty With range selector lever from one position to another. It now won't engage starter in range II, However if I can shake the lever and cuss at the same time I can get into range I neutral and start. Anyone had this problem and what is the fix.

I had the same problem with my TC 33D when new. It would only start in one of the two neutral positions on the range selector. Since it was under warranty, I just called the dealer and they came out and adjusted something (I believe it was just a safety interlock switch, but it may have been more involved than that). They said it was not an uncommon problem at the time.

I also had some troubles shifting between ranges at times. Usually just letting up on the clutch and pressing the hydro pedal a bit, then hitting the clutch again fixed it. Unfortunately, this doesn't work if the engine is not already running.

I've now got over 500 hours on the tractor and haven't had either problem lately.

Neil_L:

Welcome to TBN :D! I do not believe that this series of tractor will start "in gear" and must be started in neutral (any mid-range) with the parking brake engaged. Anyways spray all your linkages with some type of silicon/lithium spray and follow John_Mc's advise especially when engaging the PTO. I like cussing on the tractor . I developed this "bad" habit on my old geared tractor . Jay

mine doesnt start in the N between 2 and 1 only the N between 1 and 3

every now and then mine is hard to "shift" but either rocking the tractor (with body weight) is enough (im a big guy). if the tractor is running a VERY minor tap of the HST peddle is usually all it takes.

you do not have to have the parking break set to start it, nor do you have to be sitting on the seat to keep it running. (the older ones at least have no safty interloc on the seat)

I was told there is a safty switch that needs to be adjusted to get it to start in both N postions. (i havnt messed with mine yet, been to busy useing it)

Mine acts the same. If the range selector will not move I push down on the hydro pedal and it goes right in. The only time I use the clutch is to operate the PTO's. Thats the way my dealer showed us. I just read the manual and it says to use the clutch when shifting gear ratios  . I have tried pushing clutch when shifting ranges but it never helped if it did not go in . Only pushing the hydro pedal makes it go into gear. Hope I'm not hurting tractor the way I shift range. Greg

i asked "so when do i need to use the clutch"

my dealer "only when engage/disengage the pto's

although i have noticed that 7 out of 10 times i have to tap the HST peddle in reverse to get it to shift out of 4wd easly.

I've had success lowering the FEL to the ground and curling it just enough to take a little weight off the front axle. Comes out of 4wd without 'forcing' the lever.

It all comes down to having no stress or strain on the mechanisms when shifting. While I was shopping and sitting on running tractor it would't slide neatly into range. The owner/dealer/salesman said to just move the hydro pedal a little and it works every time. You just need to get things lined up correctly. I have found that you can shift from I to II on the fly if you are more or less easing along with little strain on the drive wheels.

I also have difficulty with the PTO shift mechanism, but again it's a matter of doing things gently to allow all the non-synchronized bits to line up, then it goes right into place. Ditto the 4 wheel drive lever.

The starting problem is just a minor adjustment as everyone has said. Get under there and look at it as someone else moves the lever and you'll see what's going on. Worst case -- jack it up and pull the left rear wheel so you can see and work better, but make sure the thing is on a solid stand and the brake is locked.

The TC29D hydro is not supposed to start when in any gear. It should only start in either of the two neutral's.

I have had success selecting ranges by doing as 390GT suggestedby simply taping the hydro forward or reverse, after it is running. Thanks, 390. I still have not attempted to adjust the neutral sensor which will only let it start in the upper range neutral position, not the low.
