TC29D PTO disengaging under a load

I recently purchased a used tc29d from a local dealer. I didn't get around to hooking up an implement to the PTO til a week ago, I'm building a fence and borrowed my dads auger to dig the post holes. the pto will engage fine but as soon as the auger touches the dirt it pops out of gear. the linkages are not bound up and it appears to be fully engaging but I'm afraid I may have a worn out gear in the transmission. I'm trying to decide if its worth it to make repair or cut my losses. Has anyone had this issue and may give some what may be the issue and on cost of repair? I should also add this is a shuttle shift with mechanical PTO. Thanks in advance!

First thing....follow the linkage from the handle down to where the shaft goes into the gear case. Take spray lube and spray where it goes into the case as the shaft can get rusted and stiff to move. It may not be fully going into gear. Next, check the linkage to ensure that it can fully engage. After that it can get costly.

The linkage looks like it is brand new. Nothing is bound up or rusty. Its definitely international.

My 2000 was purchased about 25 years ago. Have no idea as to what happened to it from 1963 until I purchased it. The PTO is transmission driven (if that matters), meaning when you let the clutch out with the engine running it turns if engaged. Initially, under load it would pop out. So I juryrigged a bungie cord on it to hold it engaged.

Fast forward....somewhere along the line, whatever was causing it to pop out, ceased to exist and for maybe the last 10 years it has worked just fine with me having done nothing but to use it.
