TC29D Starter assembly

My 2001 TC29D suddenly wouldn't start after 13 years of awesome service, so after I checked fuses and switches and relays, and drank a couple of 12 packs, I decided to take the starter off to bench test it and then clean it. It was only 3 below zero today when I was doing this so I didn't bother with the beer this time. Got the sucker off and brought it inside. solenoid was functioning fine and starter was engaging but being sluggish, so I figured I'd take it apart and clean it out before I went further. Well, the insides look just like new and when I went to put it back together I noticed a small ball bearing in the casing. My question is....Where does this thing go back into? I've tried searching exploded starter views and such with no luck. I'm headed to the beer store now and will check back here for a hopeful hint? Then since it's only 1 below zero, I'll probably put the starter back on and the thing still won't start.

OK, before I went out the door to the store I took one more look at this starter /bearing situation, and determined that the ball bearing belongs on the end of the shaft of the commutator? I dropped it down into the hole and when I get back I'll finish putting it back together. Please tell me if I am wrong, because I don't want that thing bouncing around inside my perfectly fine starter. Thank you.

I have a TC29D but have never had your problem....wait until, Jim, Jinman or Chris, Soundguy comes along...they'll know...PBR in Maine....hmmm? who'd a thought...

Thanks. PBR is actually the most popular beer in America right now. College punks suck it up, and they should because thanks to Obama that's all they'll be able to afford!
