Just bought a New Holland Tc29D,,tractor has been setting for a while,,got it running and and it runs fairly well,,has a loader and all that works good,,the problem im having is the steering is stiff,,it steers ok but its like the power steering is not working,,I disc the power steering cylinder to try and isolate trbl,,the siffness is in the machine itself, the front wheels turn easily,,any ideas???i guess it could be the cylinder, or the power steering pump

In case you are not aware, the power steering pump and reservoir are separate from the other hydraulics. The reservoir is under the hood, a tall black cylinder with a rubber stopper at the top with a gauge on the stopper. Check the level and fluid appearance and add NH 134 fluid if necessary to the tip of the stopper. Check for leaks and any other abnormalities. The pump is directly below the reservoir and is actually 2 pumps, the rear pump operates the rest of the hydraulics and the front the steering. Report back with what you find.

Also know that the power steering reservoir is a spin on filter of sorts. It probably has never been changed and it might be time.

checked the levels and they are good,,the reservoir is a spin on filter ??do u replace or clean it?

Yes it is a spin-on filter, part # SBA360101470. There is a drain plug directly below the filter. Remove the plug and drain and then unscrew the filter. Depending on your oil appearance, if clean, install new filter and refill and check. If oil is milky, contaminated, etc, consider flushing the system. I did this by removing one of the hoses to the steering cylinder, with that end of the cylinder full of oil. Jack the front wheels off the ground, move the wheels left and right to empty the cylinder, then turn the steering wheel to pump as much oil out as possible. ALL WITHOUT THE ENGINE RUNNING. Replace hose, replace filter and fill with NH134. You may be able to work oil back into the system by turning the wheel, if not, start engine and work wheel lock to lock to refill the system, all the while monitoring the oil level. It may take 10 minutes to purge the system.

If your going to change the filter just put fresh oil in it. Don’t trip over dollars reaching for nickels.

If you need a service manual for that New Holland, send me a PM.
