TC29D
I just purchased a 1999 tc29d and loader with only 160 hrs. It's in great shape and I've used it enough to notice one little quirk. The power steering doesn't seem "strong" enough to turn the wheels unless the tractor is moving, especially if there's a load in the bucket. Seems to steer fine as long as I'm moving forward or backward, Didn't notice it at all when the loader was off. Are these known for marginal steering under load or do I have a developing problem?

You might have a problem, my fronts turn easily even with a full bucket.

Several people with both Class II and Class III Boomers have reported this "problem" with weak power steering. I have noticed it on my tractor, but the slightest forward or backward movement causes the trouble to go away. Also, if the engine is above 2000 rpm (the recommended operating range) the problem is less apt to occur. One more thing I think I have noticed is that this weakness seems to be worse if I stop with the wheels exactly straight (steering wheel centered) and then turn the steering wheel with a load in the FEL. If I turn the steering wheel slightly off-center before I stop, the steering seems to work fine. This would indicate a "dead" spot in the steering. Now don't hold me to this because I haven't done a scientific test, but that's just my impression.

Hate to ask stupid questions but I'm new to New Holland tractors. What exactly do you mean when referring to Class II, Class III, etc?

Some of these tractors also have 'D' (Deluxe) variants.

Class I - TC18, TC21, TC24
Class II - TC25 (no longer made), TC29, TC30, TC33
Class III - TC35, TC40, TC45

I have a 2001 tc-29d and have never had any problems with steering. I can turn with one finger when mowing or running FEL.

2001 TC29D with Super-Steer and no problems what so ever with steering. Even with the loader full and the tractor sitting still.

Dunno---Called the dealer last week. He was familiar with the complaint but had no solution. Told me New Holland said it was most prevalent with turf tires and to pump the fronts up some more. I put 35 lb in 'em which did help, but two wrongs rarely make a right. It had the turf skins on it when I got it used a couple of weeks ago and I can already see they're gonna be a problem. Had a flat on the front today. The steering just seems to unload with a hissing sound up under the dash like the FEL does when it reaches it's limit. Maybe there's an adjustment on the bypass like there is on the loader valve. Anybody know? Haven't given the dealer a check yet so I still have time to back out, I guess. I love the tractor with this one exception.
