Well, today was cold out and I moved the tilt steering and now it won't hold there I put it. Any ideas?

Thanks

Tilt hydralic cylinder is froze up; You can see the cylinder below column; spray pentatrating oil on top of the cylinder and hopefully it will free up. If not, take two covers off below instrument panel to expose whole tilt cylinder; by being able to get to top area of cylinder you should be able to free up the "plunger" on top that is stuck down. If not ; you may have to replace it. In the future; keep the top of the tilt cylinder lbed to prevent it from seizing. This has been a problem with class II boomers.

I'm thinking that this problem may be aggravated by the tractor being left out in the elements. If rain continually gets to the piston, problems are bound to happen sooner or later. I believe that there was an inexpensive plastic piston rain/dirt shield that was made to possibly eliminate this problem.

Yes, Mike. The number for the tilt steering cylinder cover was posted by Spencer200 I believe. It's 86401203. I made one for my tractor out of plastic after I had the same problem as erosol is having. With a bi-annual lube and the cover, my problem went away. My "fix" the first time it stuck was pretty much exactly as dqdave1 suggested.

My Tilt cylinder has failed twice since my TC29D purchase in 2000. Indeed the problem may be aggravated by the tractor being left out in the elements, but my blue baby has never been in the rain.

How easy is it to remove the two front covers over theis cylinder? I see the two bolts directly in front, but have never removed these covers. Anything hidden I need to be aware of?

OK, I will try spraying with some WD40 today and let it sit. Maybe this will fix the problem. I always have the tractor under the carport out of the rain. Thanks for all the replies.

cover is secured by two bolts under steering column that you saw AND two bolts on each side at the front of the cover on "firewall" . Just open hood and you will note them. Ignition switch will be connected to right panel when removed. Not a bad idea to remove these occassionally as you will be amased at how dirty it becomes and there are a few linkages that should be lubed.
