TC29D
My TC29D will not start. I have replaced the battery and the main fuse. I was mowing and stopped the tractor for a while. When I went back the tractor would not start. I replaced the main fuse (it did not look bad but grasping at straws), cleaned the battery terminals, and then tractor started. Finished mowing, put tractor in barn, and now will not start again. I replaced the battery and have replaced all fuses. The tractor started once, but will not start again. The transmission is in neutral, the pto is off. When I turn key on, the lights on the dash all work and the flashers work, but engine will not start -- will not even turn over. Any ideas??

alexanderpj: Welcome to TBN and the "Blue" Forum. There are a lot more learned an experienced members out there, but IMHO it is one of those safety switches. I always blame the seat switch, but there are others. Jay

Thanks. I have wanted to blame one of the safety switches but my problem is that I don't know which one to blame!!

I have a T1510, nearly the same I think, I am a very NEW owner/operator and get this quite often. It is usually a safety, either the clutch safety does not contact quite correctly (check when you press the clutch that the plate under the floor is making contact, debris can get jammed up in there and needs to be removed) or the PTO clutch safety wire gets disconnected. One other time was due to a fuse blowing - NOT he main fuse (but did not check my manual to see which one) - so check ALL of them.

The safeties seem quite particular but apart from this problem I love my NH.

Alexanderpj, welcome to TBN and howdy to a fellow TBNer from N. TX. There's a bunch of us on here.

There have been many threads about starter problems on NH compact tractors. Do you know how to use the "Search" feature near the top of the forums page? Just search for "starter" in the New Holland Owning/Operating forum and you will find plenty of reading. Starter problems usually fall into four categories: 1. Loose/dirty connections, 2. Safety switch, 3. Blown fuse, 4. Defective starter or starter circuit including ignition switch. Since your tractor starts sometimes and doesn't start other times, there is a good chance that you have the defective starter circuit problem. I'm giving you one link to a problem and it's resolution (faulty starter circuit repair).

Check under left fender, low down; I bet a wire came off a pto safety switch; just look very close at all wires

Thanks to all responses. I have used the air hose to clean everything under tractor, paying special attention to clutch and left tractor fender area. The tractor still would not start last night. I am going back this afternoon to look at everything again with a fresh set of eyes. Will let you know.
Thanks again.

Having exactly the same issue. Did you ever find a solution?

In fact my TC29D was running well... got off the tractor for a minute or two with it still running. Gears in neutral, parking brake on and as I got back on it, it simply stopped. All fuses are OK in the fuse area on the firewall. Battery is good. Battery connections are clean. Lights come on. Glow plug goes through the sequence. But absolutely no response when the key is turned.

Thanks.

On mine, it was the safety switch on the range selector on left side. Have to put it in neutral to start it. One of the two neutral positions would not work but the other would. A shot of wd40 and a slight rotation of the roller on the end of the switch's arm fixes it. Problem is the roller sticks and wears a flat spot. Once it gets bad enough it will not allow switch internals to make contact.

Follow the ground cable from the negative battery post to where it bolts to the frame. Remove the bolt and clean the area that the cable contacts the frame. Spray battery protective spray or something to keep it from rusting. Check the end of the cable good. That could be where the problem is. Let me know if it works.
