Tractor
NH TC30 Hydro
With my tractor running and the clutch depressed everything is fine, as soon as I release it I can see the HST filter (lower left side, just past my foot) flex, first fluid sprays out then runs down the side until I push the clutch back in and turn of the tractor. I am using the NH Multi-G fluid, and the WIX/NAPA replacement (557088) for the filter.

What can be causing this? How do I fix it? I suspect that a relief or check valve in the system may not operating properly. I have looked the tubing over and there are no crimps or bends that are not from the factory.

Here is a link to a diagram of my hydraulic system

Kevin, your problem is the HST filter. Don't use anything but New Holland. Their filter is ruggedized for the pressure. You need to use the New Holland and get it much tighter than the engine oil filter. HST pressures can go as high as 200 psi. You have to have the right filter. After market filter makers like Wix and NAPA have not caught up to the requirement. Bite the bullet and buy New Holland on all HST filters. The main hydraulic filter and other filters are okay, but the HST must be New Holland.

Thanks Jinman. I think you may be right. I actually have two of these WIX 557088 filters. The one I put on when I last serviced the tractor, and a spare. Afterthe first one leaked I replaced it with the new one. When it leaked too, I took it off. When I was removing it it appeared to be bent, so I installed the old one and it was bent too. When I did the last service on the tractor last year, my NH dealer didn't have any NH HST filters in stock, and told me that I could use a WIX as a replacement. Maybe he did it to sell me more hydraulic fluid. I'll swing by there tomorrow and get one.

Kevin, it's hard to believe that a dealer would not know the history of that filter. In the beginning, several owners in cold regions of the US blew out filter o-ring seals. New Holland had a special rugged filter made and both were stocked for awhile. I think now, only the rugged or re-designed filter is available. Just make sure when you get the NH filter that you seat it very well. I try to tighten mine as much as I can by hand using no wrench. That means they are hard to get off and I have to use a wrench, but I normally use a wrench anyhow.

BTW: I'm a retired FTMC (missile fire control). I was disability retired in 1981.

I agree with Jinman that using only New Holland filters is most important; the New Holland dealer should have know of the problem and not suggested Wix. One other thought:; the O-rings on the diverter valve tend to blow out too. I used New Holland O-rings , not very good, TSC O-rings lasted about 35 hours; then I got some, (with higher pressure tolerance) from my local Caterpillar dealer, has lasted over 100 hOURS!

Thanks again. In all fairness, from what I recall the guy that I talked to was pretty young, and I haven't seen him since.

I was a nuke MMC, carriers mostly, but did a little time on subs first. Spent some reserve time with a Construction Batallion in Saudi during Desert Storm. I was retired on disability too.
