It is still a good deal with straight shift. The only reason I would want the hydro over the gear drive is if you are doing a lot of mowing around trees. If not a gear drive is good. I have the hydro on a dx33( red version) but have had the gear drive on a older case and like it just as well.

Just remember that tranny is designed to have you select a gear, then go. No shifting while moving unless you are either very good or like to hear the straight cut, non-synchronized gears clashing when you try to shift. It's really a good thing on a tractor. I have my first hydro now and I'm still not sure I like it enough that I'd do it again if I had a choice. If you don't have a lot of delicate maneuvering to do, the gear is going to be just fine, and a lot more instinctive to drive.

It's still a good deal considering everything you are getting with the tractor.

Allthough the 9x3 isn't as easy to operate as a HST it is cheaper to fix if it breaks. You may also like to ask if the Clutch has ever been replaced on the machine depending on how much he abused it it could be on its way out.
