So the glow plugs got intermittent last week and died two days ago altogether. So the tractor sat outside first in freezing rain, then snow.

So yesterday the throttle was stuck in the idle position, think its the cable (frozen/rusted perhaps?) and the critter absolutely will not start at all (because the glow plugs are out).

So today I'm trying to pull the cowling to get to either the throttle assembly or to the ignition switch or the glow plug timer relay. Figure if I can get one or the other systems working I can start the beast and get it inside and warm it up.

But no . . . loosening the last bolt (one of the two that holds the cowling halves together, I hear a loud pop and the bolt now free spins without coming out. Can't wiggle the cowling past the steering column tilt handle, can't lift it high enough to see if there is a nut or something I can work against.

Any ideas? Anyone.

I don't want to break the parts, they are running $300 + a piece.

Thanks,

Chris

So I can get my hand under the cowl piece now. No nut is felt, just smooth molded plastic. Anyone know if the bolt threads into plastic threads or is there a nut secured inside the plastic?

If I can get a sawzall blade inbetween the cowl pieces I'm going to try to cut it, but the bolts almost look they are hardened. Go figure.

Thanks again,

Chris

Those bolts go into a knurled nut that is press fit (and probably even glued) into the plastic. If the bolts corrode or slightly crossthread, the knurled nuts spin and there is nothing you can do but basically break out the nut. I have one side cowling held together with only one bolt on the firewall because of the identical problem. Try not to break the cowling, but force it open/off is the only way I think you can go.:(

Thanks for taking the time to reply Jinman.

I was able to work a Sawzall into the seam and using a little pressure to open it (the seam) up, I was able to cut it with a fine metal blade. Some collateral damage (very little actually), but I decided to go that route before taking the chance of breaking the plastic.

So anyway, going to order an ignition switch (may go the NAPA switch route from other threads) a glow plug relay and a throttle cable.

Couple questions -

Where do you folks like to order parts online?

Is the glow plug timer on ebay the same as the one for the TC33? My part says S81NF. The ebay part says S81NL?

Anybody order acquire a throttle cable local, or is there something proprietary about the NH one? By the time I got the cowls off it was getting too dark to see how the cables disconnect from the throttle assemblies.

Thanks all,

Chris

Chris, this is just a SWAG, but I think the one that is S81NF is a Fast timer (5 seconds) and S81NL is a Long timer (10 seconds). I assure you that I have no definite facts, but that's just an educated guess since there are two timers that are similar on the New Hollands and the difference is time.

Thanks again guys for taking the time to reply.

I did get the eBay part that I referred to, S81NL. It installed in the same place, was a little bit shallower, but the plug pushed right in. More importantly the glow plugs immediately worked again. I didn't notice an appreciably longer warming cycle than the S81NF that I replaced, but then again I had never timed the old one.

I did check out Messick's, but went with Partspring for the throttle cable. No particular reason. Been 4 days and it hasn't shipped yet, so I cleaned the old one best I could and reinstalled it today.

Can you drill the bolt head off an then work on the knurled nut? I'm going through the glow plug issues now and I plan to put a coat of never seize on the bolts going back together.
