I was doing a little grading a couple of weeks ago when the tractor died out. The fuel gauge showed a 1/4 of tank. After chekcing a few things, I decided to put some fuel in the tractor (why I don't know) and when I tried to crank it (while bleeding the fuel ine the tractor fired up and soon ran normally. I didn't think much about it at the time. Yesterday I was finishing up the grading project and again with the fuel gauge showing 1/4 of tank it died out again. Any fix available or do I just live with the fact that I'm out of fuel at 1/4 a tank? Has anyone else had this problem? Advise would be appreciated...

JYTC33:

The gauges and switches on the TC series of tractors are in my opinion the series' biggest weaknesses. There have been a lot of posts here with complaints from owners/operators. I have not yet had any problems with switches and/or fuses; I just fill my tank when it reads 1/4. I generally try to keep the tractor tanked up due to fuel tank condensation. Jay

PS: BTW if I have not already done so- Welcome to TBN and the Blue Forum :D!

Jay,

Thanks for reply. Been a forum watcher for a while now. Great site!!! Members here have saved me some real money posting solutions they've used. The fuel gauge thing just started and I beleive it may be fuse related but I wanted to see if anyone else has expereienced the same problem. I too normally fueled at a 1/4 tank to keep tank full but with recent problem, unless there is a fix, I'll have to adjust my timing.

Again thanks for reply and maybe someone else has expereinced same issue. Jy

If the gage works at all, I'm sure it is not a fuse problem. My fuel gage is "sticky" as is my tachometer. I have to thump on the face of the instrument panel sometimes to bring everything alive. Then, everything works normally for the rest of the day.

Something may have changed inside your gage to cause it to go out of calibration. I'd just do a mental recalibration for where empty is. I don't know about you, but I never worry about any level on my fuel gage except empty.;)

You can get a replacement gage, but they are around $50 and you have to disassemble the instrument panel to put them in. If my gage worked at all and I could determine where empty is on the gage, I'd just let it go.

TC-30 gauges I believe are pretty similar , and having my fuel gauge completely die on me one day , decided to see what made it tick . Well , Not much in my opinion and at the time N.H. wanted $82 for a replacement .

So I checked around and bought a new guage with sending unit from J.C. Whitney for $22 plus $5 shipping . Although as mentioned , you have to take alot of the dash apart , I ended up putting the new guage into the square rubber plug on left side of steering wheel , ( not sure what option would of went there , but am going to build a custom dash out of diamond plate with new water temp guage and this current fuel gauge , plus use stock tach , so this location works for now , especially since new rubber plug is only $5 ) .

Adjusting the float assembly may be a option , but based upon the required time consumtion in removing sheet metal , plus etc...... , I would just stick with filling before 1/4 .;)

I had the same problem on my TC40 where it suddenly died on me with 1/4 tank showing on the gage. Went through the same routine of scratching my head trying to figure out what happened? Finally added more fuel, bleed the system and it started right up. Now I never let it get down to 1/4 tank and use the 1/2 mark as my "empty". Heck...I figure if I'm out working long enough to burn 1/2 tank of fuel then I'm probably due for bio-break anyway and might as well fill up the tank while I'm at it. :D
