New Holland TC30 Hydro 4x4, Gravely Zero Turn Mower
When I was shopping for new tractors a year and a half ago, the dealer was moving TC33D's and TC29D's around by standing next to them and using his hand to operate the hydro pedal. Does'nt it seem strange that a dealer would disable the safety features that would prevent this type of operation.

I had forgotten about this until yesterday. On my way home, I saw some roadworkers using TC29D's to tear out rubber strips separating lanes of concrete. The were using a beefy sort of middle buster device. And... they were doing this by walking along side the tractors (3 of them) as they operated them with their hand on the hydro pedal. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Have I uncovered some sort of secret anti-safety society in my area? Are they reading this right now ? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The dealer didn't necessarily disabled anything. My TC25D, also a Class II Boomer, does not have a switch under the seat that prevents doing this.

My 33D has a seat switch. I know it works because when mowing backward I have a tendency to raise up in the seat when looking back and after a couple seconds I'll hear that peculiar sound of an engine dying and think, DOH! time to sit back down.

I would truly hope that anyone (dealer or owner) would not permanently disable any safety device. I have temporarly disabled or activated one to troubleshoot certain problems but then returned them to their operating state.

The dealer wouldn't need to "Disable" the switch, they would only have to activate it with a clamp ar similar device (a large gem clip will do it) to be able to move them around.

The seat switches came along on the later models for exactly the reason you have seen. People where not sitting on them to operate them. This was an early oversight on New Hollands part.

My TC29D (2001?) has been without safety switches from day-one. Although I have operated the tractor while standing, I just realized it when I jumped off with the MMM still engaged! Scared the heck out of me. I talked to the dealer and he said that it should have the safety switch (I haven't looked to see if it does). He said that if it doesn't, they will add one at no charge.

Stumpman,

Which dealer do you work with? The local NH dealer in my area is just a bit difficult to work with, so I've been searching for others within a reasonable distance to talk to.

Thanks! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think I would have to disable the safety switches too, I'm frequently standing up looking forward past blind spots in cabs etc. I don't use a mmm though and never mess with a pto implement when the tractor is running.

I have a hard time convincing people not to be around the loader when it is raised. They think that if the tractor is off it is fine to stand near or under it!!!!

My lawn mower has such a seat switch, major pain.

However, I could not use a tractor with such a switch, it would have to be disabled. I'm all for safety, & like the neutral or clutch-in starting switches, and roll bars & shielding & all.

But a seat switch is not compatable with the way a farmer uses a tractor. Makes it a useless tool. That is the one that goes too far.

I once made a bypass for the safety on my seat switch for my riding lawn mower.. but I did it in a sort of 'safe' way.

I didn't disable the switch at the seat, but instead wired up a second switch in parallel with it.. a special momentary one( it worked as a momentary, but you could pull out on the switch and click it locked, to make it a fixed switch... works great. If I had to stand up in the seat or something to look over, etc.. all I had to do was hold down the switch on the dash... if I fell off the tractor, then the momentary switch opened up, and the regulare interlock went into effect. If I absolutely had to, I could click the switch down and then completely leave the mower.. though don't remember ever doing this.

A buddy of mine rigged up one of those lanyard style switches seadoo's use on his tractor. If he fell off his tractor
the lanyard pulled out, and the ignition shut down.. this works good for a gas powered tractor.. or even a deisel with a cutout solenoid on the fuel pump... but an older diesel would be near impossible to do this with, unless you rigged a starvation solenoid into the fuel line... not sure if that is 'friendly' to the engine though.. letting the injection pump bleed dry... then again... might keep the tractor from running away.. crossing a street.. going over a cliff.. etc..

I also rigged this up for a sears gas powered trail mower I had. It had a seat cushion that you sat on, on top of your regular tractor seat... was real squirly.. if you fidgeted, sometimes it would kick out. I wired it up into my mowers bypass I previously mentioned.
