We are looking at replacing our old 1010 john deere loader tractor which specs are 36 pto hsp. and 113 cu. in. We mainly use it to run a 5 ft. brush hog and we skid out tree tops for firewood sales in winter and early spring. This tractor works well for us except it takes all 5 acres to turn it. With the new tractor we would like to purchase a 6 ft. finish mower to mow 5 acres of barn lot. What we are wondering is would the 35 be enough hsp. and is there any andvantage of going to the 40 just to get into the four cylinder motor?

I can't speak for the tc40 guys, but my tc35d has done everything I've asked it to do. I run a 50" tiller and a 6' bush hog with ease. The only power issue I've encountered is that when your in High/High traveling at the 15-16mph raqnge and you head up a hill, the rpms will drop and the speed will decrease some. And a real good grade hill, I'll have to shift down to the High/low range.

I don't recall if the tc40 people see this same HP issue or not. It's not a big factor for me anyway.

Good luck

I pulled my old Woods 6 ft finish mower with my old Ford 1720 so I don't think you'll have a problem with either the 35D or 40D, both of which are bigger. I picked the 40D myself because I was a little concerned about stepping up into the bigger tractor from my 1720, and not significantly increasing horsepower. Yes the 35D is more, but I wasn't sure if it was enough to handle the added size and weight. I've been very happy with the power of my 40D, but I might have been satisfied with the 35D too. Good luck!

CWWANTS,
I don't ever recall anyone, anywhere, sorry that they had more horsepower. Especially on the same size/platform tractor. Go with the 40.

I mow fields and brush up to about 1" with a 60" bush hog and use the FEL to pry out stumps, push brush and logs and find that 35HP has plenty of power....except on the big hill back to the barn in high gear, as noted above. (I have a TC35, not the hydro.)

I was at my budget limit going to 35HP (with FEL and cutter, etc)...and at some point the more horsepower urge had to face a constraint. While no one has ever complained about too much horsepwer, your question is whether 35 is enough. My guess is it is plenty. If the question is how many horsepower can you afford...that's a different question.

My opinion is similar to Overlyrun. Every time I think I should have gotten the most hp in a Class II Boomer, 33hp instead of 25, I think about the extra money that would have cost and I feel better again /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif. Since I could not fit a larger class Boomer in my garage, I didn't have that decision to make. If money is no object, or the dealer is giving a great price on the TC40, I'd got for that model. Otherwise, 35 hp is more than adequate. With compact tractors, you usually run out of traction before running out of hp. Even if you have the traction fewer hp usually means you just have to go a little slower. This all assumes you do not have a specific task or implement that needs the additional 5 hp.

I went w/ 35D only because dealer didn't have
40D and I got better deal to buy this one.
U will be happy w/ either one.

I went with the TC40D. Spend a little time looking at some of the implements you may want to add down the road. You'll discover that 40 hp is the bottom line cutoff for a lot of attachments. (like medium duty bush hogs, etc) I decided to go with the 4cyl to allow myself the option of adding different attachments later. Now I wish I'd gone a little bigger. But so far the 40 hasn't let me down. I think it was worth the extra money. My good friend in Indiana (he farms 1400 ac) told me to buy as much horsepower as I could afford.....he was right.....go for it, you won't regret it.
