The temp guage on my tc35D just stopped working. Bad Sensor??

Look at the first picture below. Us a jumper to short out the temp sensor to ground. Pull the connector back just a bit and put the jumper on or remove the wire completely and put the jumper in the connector (on the wire, not the sensor). When you have this shorted to ground, go turn on the key for a couple of seconds and watch your gage. If it goes all the way to maximum, then it is working properly and you need a new sensor. If it goes less than maximum or does not move at all, you need to replace the gage as shown in the rest of the photos. The gage is between $50 and $60. I've replaced mine once and I already need another one. It seems the hot sun and condensation take their toll on our gages. Luckily, only my temp gage has failed. The fuel gage and tach still work.

Thanks again Jim...You really know these tractors. All other guages are working fine also. I'll give it a try.

Jim, I have a Case IH D40 and all it has the idiot light for a temp gauge, can I add a traditional temp.gauge if I bought it? Would I need to add any wiring or will my instrument cluster automatically pickup on the new gauge? Would I need to add any sensors, etc.

Jim are the TC35Ds susceptible to the dingle ball problem same as the bigger deluxe tractors? If so could schooch be experiencing a running cool scenario?

Big_Lug, my experience with automotive changeovers to a gauge requires the sending unit be matched to the gauge. Maybe you can find a Case model using the gauge set up and switch it out.

Absolutely! If he grounds the wire going to the gage and it goes to maximum, then the problem is either the sending unit or that thermostat jammed open as you suggest. Buying a cheap non-contact IR thermometer from HF is a great tool to do a double check of actual temperature. You can remove the sender and test it carefully with a flame from a cigarette lighter to see if the gage goes up, but when you do that, you lose a bunch of coolant, making it a messy job. That $9.95 little IR thermometer can tell you all you need to know without removing the thermostat or the sender.

Sorry. . .I missed your question yesterday. Your sensor is an off/on switch and not a thermister based sensor like the DX models. If you can find an analog or digital gage with a sensor that will screw into the block or be adapted to fit, it would work fine, but of course you will have to find a method of mounting the gage. I'd be tempted to carry an IR thermometer (about the size of a cellphone). That way I could just stop and read temperatures anywhere on the tractor including hydraulic temperature. I am a big, big fan of those IR thermometers.
