TC35D won\'t start

I took a few days off to play on my tractor which is located on 5.25 acres about an hour from my home. When I tuned the key ....nothing.....I turned my signal lights on ...they worked. I tuned my headlights on ...did'nt work. I opened the hood & discovered that there was no water in the battery...took it out..brought it home filled it with distilled water and charged it for a couple of days. I brought the battery back, installed it, tuned the key...nothing. Now I'm thinking of all the things that it could be and how I am mechanically challenged and how much money is it going to cost me if I can't fix this thing myself....is it the safety switch under the seat, the brake switch, the ignition switch, the starter???? The closest mechanic is an hour away and charges $62.50/hr!! I gather my tools, drive back to the dealer, question their mechanic, go home, get on the internet....TBN, search for all the threads that deal with a tractor not starting and drive back to the tractor armed with a voltmeter and a test light. After checking, it was'nt my starter so I opened the panel under the steering wheel and there it was ....a huge mouse nest. I cleared it away to find that the wire that goes to my starter was eaten....I spliced a small piece of wire, tuned the key and it STARTED. So I thank my dealer & TBN for all of their information which has now given me more confidence!

I seem to remember reading a post from you about buying your machine not too long ago, I think you said it was your first tractor.

By the time I was halfway through reading your latest post, I was starting to worry & guess what the problem might be - but I've only been a tractor-owner for five days now (my first), so I wasn't exactly comfortable giving advice, but felt somebody had to do something.

Then I got to the part with the mouse; You Fixed It Yourself! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Great Job!

I've read some posts of mice doing similar damage to wiring, some found success with mothballs while others left rat poison in and around their tractor (one even got some cats) - but I'm sure you've read that by now.

I'd be interested in your solution: I've left older vehicles unattended for many months on my property, and found all kinds of 'mouse sign.' I'm sure they'll be all over my machine as soon as the spring comes /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

By the way, mine is the TC35A. I can't wait for warmer weather so I can do some real work, but I'm having some fun with the snow too. How're you liking yours?
Bruce.

Re: TC35D won\'t start

My wife and I store her 87 Monte Carlo SS for the winter in our barn, we put a sheet of Bounce dryer sheets on each floor mat, one on the air cleaner cover, one on each side of the car on the barn floor, one at either end on the floor, and a couple in the trunk. Since we have been doing this we have not had any mouse problems. I had a customer the other day with a TC24DA that the fuel guage read full all the time, you guessed it, mice had chewed the wires for the fuel sender and they were shorted together. Try the bounce dryer sheets and see if the mice stay away. Of course we put new ones in every year when we put the car away.

Re: TC35D won\'t start

Bruce, I plan on going back to my property this coming weekend to do a little FEL & box blade work with some imported dirt that I recently bought. I really like my tractor and after fixing it, I feel more comfortable with it. I'll probably place some moth balls in strategic spots for the mice....TechinNY may have something there with the 'Bounce' sheets ...but with the mice we have down here, they'll most likely use them to sleep on.

Re: TC35D won\'t start

I have trouble with those pesky mice as well, they set up shop in the weirdest places. They can do some real damage if they get to chewing on wires, hoses, etc. I hate to use bait or poison for fear of my dogs getting into it. I'll have to try out the dryer sheet trick.

Maybe cats wouldn't be a good idea either! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I wish you better luck this weekend, playing with some dirt using the FEL & box-blade sounds like a blast.

I'll probably finish hooking up my old plow truck plow to my macine and move a little snow (funny how we haven't gotten much since the tractor arrived). Might even push some wood into a pile for a bonfire, but I'll keep the tractor parked a safe distance /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif (there's a thread on TBN of some poor guy who was pushing wood into a large fire pit and had his machine roll into the pit - while the wood was burning! Yikes! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif ).

Re: TC35D won\'t start

yea, I don't like the idea of poison either...I may throw a few sheets of 'Bounce' like 'TechinNY' said...it may also keep the dirt dobblers away as well.
