The parking brake on my TC40 doesn't do a good job of holding the tractor in place. How can I adjust the brake to hold better?

Thanks

cvpuser,

Are you saying that when fully engaged the tractor rolls, or is there an engagement issue where the brake doesn't stay on lock ?

If the brake doesn't stay engaged you may need to adjust the toothed dog and or bend it a bit to get a good interface with the pedal locking bar.

There was a bit of dialog about this a while back. Try a search.

It's not an engagement issue, I can "set" the brake just fine. However, the tractor rolls while the parking brake is engaged, even on the slightest slope.

I know the tractor is still under warranty, but it would cost me a lot of time and money to find a trailer and haul it back to the dealer, which is about 20 miles away.

Thanks!!

cvpuser,

Well, not to offend, but are you setting it hard enough ??? I personally stomp mine down and lock it.

How well do the brakes work normally??

There are adjusting rods from each pedal back to the actuators, but you need to be careful to adjust them equally. NH specs pedal free travel of between 3/4" and 1 3/16". Measure by pushing down one pedal until the brake engages and measure to the other pedal. The adjusting nut is on the rod back towards the main drive axle and brake drum.

I'm a little suspicious of this measurement, though. Mine drops almost 3 1/4" and locks up plenty tight.

If your free travel is excessive the toothed lock may not be holding the pedal 'low' enough for the brakes to hold. Maybe you can CAREFULLY lock the parking brake as you normally do and look at the toothed dog and see at which point the lock bar engages.

I'm not sure which model tractor you have (TC40 or TC40D), but your post said TC40, so I'll go with that. The brake pedals and parking brake on a TC40 are on the right side of the platform. Other than that, they work similar to the "D" models which have the brakes on the left.

I guess the first question to ask is if your normal brake pedals work? The parking brake just holds the brake pedals in the depressed postion, so if the normal brakes work, you have a parking brake lock mechanism problem. If the normal brakes don't work or your pedals have excessive play, you need to adjust the rod going from the pedal to the brake assy. housing. It almost sounds to me like you don't really have good normal brakes and the actuator rod might even have come loose and your pedals are returning to normal position only because of the return spring. Look under your platform for a loose or damaged part. I'll bet you find your problem.

If all looks normal and you have no brakes at all, you probably do need to get your tractor back to your dealer for service. It should take a long time for the wet brakes on our tractors to wear so much they will not engage.

...my two cents worth.

Thanks for all the effort you guys are putting in to answering my question! This is a great forum!

My brakes seem to work fine otherwise. I can stop the tractor and hold it on a steep slope without any difficulty. When I set the parking brake, however, it's as if there's no brake at all. I push the brake pedal(s) down and flip the lever back to hold them in place. The pedal(s) stay where I set them, but it's not enough brake. If I push the brake pedal(s) down farther, the lever (of coarse) releases, but the brakes will hold the tractor.

The problem seems to be that the pedal isn't going down far enough when I set the parking brake. The earlier comment is interesting in that I may not be pressing the pedal down far enough. (No offense taken!) It never occured to me that there's a toothed mechanism and that I may simply have to press the pedal down farther to catch the next tooth. I'll try that and see if it works.

Thanks again!!

I think mine is still catching the first or second tooth, but I expect with time and wear, It'll be the third or fourth tooth.
