TC40

Hi Folks,
I have just found this list, and have spent two hours browsing the posts..I have one question now.. I have a Massey Ferguson 235 and im getting ready to trade. I have been looking at the TC 40. I have never owned a compact, and i am curious if the TC will handle my implements like the Massey. it is a 2wd, I am unsure of the horsepower, but it handles my tailorway 5 ft harrows and my 5 ft Hardee bush hog well..I dont want to step down in performance, but the full size TN 55 is the next step up and about 5000 dollars more. We work about 35 acres, so I want to be sure to get enough tractor to suit us.. Will a TC 40 run a 6 ft bush hog efficiently?? I would like to trade my 5 ft in one day.. any opinions will be greatly appreciated in my shopping for a new toy..

The TC40 will handle a 5ft bush hog effectively through heavy brush. I just recently used a 7ft woods bush hog on my TC40D and it handled it fine in moderate conditions. Had to slow down a little in the heavy areas but this was OK with me as I usually slow down to look for hidden items in the brush.

One down side to the compacts (compared to the utility class you are familiar with) is the lower ground clearance. This can be a benefit but if you have any agricultural uses this could be a detriment. My parents have a MF 275 they use for haying which straddles the hay capably. My TC40D requires that the hay not be raked together as high due to the lower ground clearance.

Now, the $5k difference is spit... over the long term. The TN55 is actually a hair less PTO hp than your Massey 235... and the TC40 is way less.

Assuming you have that great world renowned Perkins fuel sipping diesel... your torque is better.

The TN has superior hydraulics over your current Massey...

Your Massey {if Perkins} has a bullet proof, time tested engine!

The TN is Iveco...ahhhhhhhhhhhh. I just got lockjaw... sorry.

If you must upgrade... go TN, not TC that's the opposite direction.

Fishy, I can't add a lot to what has been said except to suggest that you look around at people who are doing farming on a similar sized farm and see if any of them are using a compact tractor. Your dealer might also be able to help you locate someone. I'd talk to them. If you can't find someone, I'd stick more to the AG type tractor. Just my opinion...

I currently have a 3 cylinder International 454 with a diesel. Even compared to comparable compact horsepower tractors, this tractor will easily outpower them with what appears to be far greater torque. Displacement is 179 cu in. Pistons are 3.875 and the stroke is over 5". I have yet to find an exact horsepower rating on this engine, but I recall it was about 40 hp. The 48 hp compact I use while a wonderful engine and much cleaner burning, doesnt seem to have quite as much torque and it becomes obvious only when the 80" brush hog hits very heavy brush/grass or when I back it to far into the pond. I should think with only a 6' hog, the TC 40 would be adequate. I like John Miller the 3rd think the Perkins diesel is pretty sweet, our old forklift ran a Perkins, my International is very similar to the Perkins in appearance. Wow, thanks for all the helpful input. I didnt know so many people read this discussion group. My Massey does have the good ole Perkins Deisel. That part I love..

what about this Iveco engine, is that in both the TN & TC models>>?? is that a reliable engine>>??

We have a Kubota L4850 at work which was where I got my brush hog from. They did not want it and gave it to me. Its a Woods 80" offset weighing in at about 1300lbs. After using it for a couple of mows I checked the blades to check the shape, they were perfect, I knew something was wrong since I had hit a few rocks. The blades were on backwards, the cutting edge only got to see what the blunt edge had been beating. After flipping them around, the load on the engine was the only real difference I could see. I was hoping my pasture which looked pretty good getting cut with the blades cutting with a 1/2" rounded chunk of steel would now look like a putting green with some sharp crisp cutting edges. Didn't happen. Oh well, I feel pretty lucky to have received the mower in the first place, Rat...
