My 1-year old TC40A has 130 hours on it and I have major problems getting it in and out of 4wd. I understand that this is not synchronized and that occasionally it may need some tinkering to get it to engage/disengage, but 50% of the time, it is stuck in either 2 or 4 wd.

The dealer has had it there numerous times and has basically said that because it's not synchronized, this will happen.

Has anyone else seen or heard of this problem?

Thanks

Dick

Getting into and out of 4wd on my TC25D can be difficult if the driveline is bound up or if the FEL bucket is full. When I have trouble, I lower the bucket to take pressure off the front wheels and it slips into or out of 4wd very easily.

If you search this forum, you'll find lots of folks who have had similar problems. Getting into 4WD has never been a problem for me. I just apply pressure on the lever and move slightly. It goes right in. Getting out of 4WD often requires lifting the front wheels with the FEL due to driveline wind-up. You can also try rolling slowly forward and rotating the steering wheel left and right while trying to disengage 4WD. That method can also release the driveline wind-up.

If, after you get the your tractor out of 4WD, you can sit still and put it into and out of 4WD easily, then it's not any mechanical problem.

BTW: Do your operate your tractor on hard paved surfaces? That causes driveline wind-up lots more than working on soft surfaces. I also think turfs, ags, and industrial tires all have different characteristics for causing the problem.

I seem to have difficulty getting both in and out of 4wd. The regional NH manager suggested turning the front wheel to free up the line and that has had marginal success. This happens regardless of whether I'm carrying anything in the bucket. I'll try using the loader to take weight off the front end and see what happens.

Thanks!

I seem to have problems getting in and out of 4wd. I'll try using the bucket to take weight off the front and see what happens. Our soil is as sandy as you'll find at any beach. Rolling and applying pressure on the lever hasn't worked for me. I have rolled the TC40 all over this place with not much luck.

Lifting the front end, turning the wheels side to side and rolling the tractor just to engage and disengage 4wd seems odd to me, especially on brand new equipment. Would you consider this a design flaw? Does it happen on other brands? Or is this just the way it works with gear vs synch? I love my Boomer but just find this strange.

Thanks for the reply,

Dick

Actually, it's more normal on a new machine than on an older machine.

On both my Boomers, engaging and disengaging 4WD got a little easier as they broke in. I still have to lift the front wheels off the ground to disengage 4WD my 350 hour Boomer. I don't really find its too much of a nuisance. That's because I seldom have to engage and disengage 4WD. If I found it necessary to engage it a lot, I can see where it would be a pain.

I don't use the 4WD a whole lot on my 24DA, but when I do it generally comes out easily. About 1/3 or so of the time it won't go in, but I just bump the treadle forward or back a bit and it drops right in.

I hope I don't ever get that windup thing because I don't have a loader with which to lift the front end. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

simply backing up.. or driving into less tractive areas would work... could also jack the front up in an 'emergency'

I find that just turning the front wheels one way or another will eventually let me slip it in. Pressing the tredle peddle also works with my TC24.

Well, I just got it back from the NH dealer after a week in the shop. It's like a different tractor. No problems at all getting it in or out of 4wd. I'll find out exactly what they did and post it.

Thanks for all of the replies!

This is a really nice forum. It's nice to find a resource like this.
