Long time lurker, first time I've needed to ask a question! I used the search and couldn't find what I'm looking for. My 2005 TC40a has a small leak from where the PTO comes out from the back of the tractor. I'm guessing it's as simple as draining the oil, and opening the cover around the PTO but looking at the parts diagram at Messicks I'm not quite sure what I need to get, my gut tells me its part #5116701.

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to TBN, Blue. Yes, that is the seal and I would recommend the gasket, SBA322990990 too. It is pretty much as simple as draining the oil, removing the seal retainer and replacing it.

Cool, thanks for the info, I was wondering about that gasket as well.

I hate to revive an old thread, but I was curious as to how your project went? I've got the same issue and just ordered the parts from Messick's. I was wondering if there were any special tips or tricks to getting the seal out? I've seen guys with other models that will put a few screws in it and use those to get the seal out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thisdj, I tend to remember simple repairs that end up being pitas and I honestly don't remember doing this repair. I know I did it so it must not have been bad getting that seal out. Once you take that cover off it's right there I think. Shouldn't be too much of an problem, I think I would have come back and reported any sticky issues I ran into as well. Let us know how it goes.

I really appreciate the response! It will probably be a couple months until I actually do it. I'm coming up on my 300 hour fluid change so I figured that would be the time to do it. It doesn't leak that bad right now, so I'm not in imminent danger. I just like to address small issues before they become larger issues! I'll report back to here when I do it so we have something on record for future reference. Stay tuned!

If I remember right, once you have the seal retainer off of the tractor, you should be able to push the seal out of the retainer from the backside with a screwdriver.

I think you're right. I was looking at it this morning and it appears that the seal sits in the cover and doesn't stay around the shaft like on some other tractors. So, I'm hopeful that once I remove the 4 bolts and take off the cover, that the seal will come out with it. Then I can just pop the old seal out, put the new one on, replace the gasket on the cover and put the bolts back in. That's my plan anyhow. Again, I really appreciate the help!

I just wanted to update this old thread I hijacked. I was able to get my seal replaced and fix my slow leak around the PTO shaft. It ended up being a pretty simple procedure. Once I took the bolts out of the housing it just took a little persuasion to separate from the tractor. The old gasket had a pretty good hold still. Once that was removed I just had to get the seal out of the housing. It didn't come out super easily, but at the time I wasn't exactly sure what I was working with so I didn't get too physical with it. Ultimately, you can just take it out in pieces if you have to. It is in there pretty snug. I just pried it out a little until I could get on it with needle nose and then started working my way around. Once it was out I sat the new one in there and lined it up. I then used the old one as a press in a way and slowly hit it around until it got seated. That last 1/16" was a bit tough, but it made it. At that point I just took a razor blade and cleaned off the old gasket from the tractor and the housing and put the new gasket on, put the bolts back in and called it a job. Just remember, try to do this when you're replacing your hydraulic oil. Or at least drain the oil. But it's been a week now and I have no leaks at all so it did the trick. Thanks to the contributors on this post and if the next guy has any questions, please let me know. I'm happy to help in any way I can. That's what this place is for!

Glad to hear you were able to get your seal replaced and for providing a little more detail for others if they ever need it.
