TC40A Tranny leak

If it were me I would get the $20 part and draing the fluid into clean containers so I could reuse it and replace the plug. Looks simple enough.

Thanks Jinman and JC. That was sure tantalizing to see the expander tool in the boiler pipe! Wish I had something like that that would work here. I'm trying to attach a picture (taken with the cell phone) of the problem that may explain things better. The plug has a raised center that protrudes outward. Darn it! The leaking area is at the bottom, beneath where I tried to seal it with the Gray gasket compound. Looked promising for about 24 hours then started oozing from the left end of the gray. If you look close you can see the trail running down from the left end of the gray stuff. Apparently, there's about 9 gallons of hyd. oil behind this plug. I was really hoping someone would say they knew of a NH campaign to fix the problem.

Harwill,

What I'm proposing sounds a bit crazy but might have a chance. I'm thinking a guy could take a hammer drill (set to hammer drill) and take a appropriate size drill bit with shaft dia of 1/4" to 3/8" to mount in the chuck with the exception of reversing the bit (putting the cutting end in the chuck and flat bottom round shank facing outward). if you run the drill the flat shank will rotate and with a reciprocating action same somewhat like a tiny jack hammer. You would then try to tap outward the bottom edge of the metal plug. I bit you that may expand it enough in a controlled manner to stop the leak. I'll do that before taking the oil out and replacing the plug. You would have to destroy the plug before putting a new one in any way. I don't reckon that will harm your rear casting around the plug. Just a suggestion.

Thanks all, I'm tempted to try hammering out the sealing edge with some suitable tool that won't deform the cup and see if that produces any results.

The plug is just a seal according to the parts list.

It appears there is a slight bend upward on the left side of the rear drawbar slide. When I got the tractor, the drawbar was not installed. It does not look like it has ever been used. However, one of the four bolts attaching the drawbar carrier to the bottom of the trans. housing was partially out of the hole and the threads boogered. Dealer didn't have the drawbar pin; It was a king's ransome anyway. So I'm making one of those. Since I don't see any obvious damage to the Drawbar carrier, I'm having a hard time imagining a blow hard enough to deform the case and make the plug leak. Besides, that is supposed to be the toughest part of the tractor, right?

I think you got a good chance to stop the leak. At least use use a flat bottom punch and a ball peen hammer and gently:rolleyes: bring it to conformance. Have a 4 lb hammer at the ready if it tries to play hard ball:D Good luck.
