I went to pull HST dip stick at rear of my TC40D and only about 6 inches came out. Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the piece inside? I need to do an all fluid change anyway so can I remove something to get at dip stick? Thanks in advance for comments.

Wow that's a strange problem. I'll have to crack open the manual and take a look. Part of me wonders of a magnetized string or wire would help you retrieve it (thru the dipstick hole). Plus now I wonder if it can get pulled into any of the spinning gear assemblies. The other option would be a magnetized wire snaked in the the drain plug (when you are changing fluids).

I have a little flexable magnet I got at NAPA that you can bend any shape you want and the head is about 3/8 dia. You might be able to use somthing like this through the dipstick hole. I would be concerned about it getting into the gears.

This sounds like a warranty problem to me...

Problem is, there is no way of knowing how long the missing part of the dipstick has been 'missing', unless you felt it break off while pulling?

I broke my engine oil dipstick by not being careful enough putting it back in. Always wanted to kink right at the spot welds near the ring handle and finally broke while I was trying to straighten it. I felt lucky the dipstick didn't have to be retrieved. After replacing it, I don't use the handle, I push it down by gripping the stick just above the tube.

Sorry I don't have any good ideas.
Dave.

That dipstick is pretty short. Are you sure you didn't get the whole thing? The crosshatch "Full" mark is not clearly visible and the dipstick isn't drilled like many I've seen. I just checked my HST oil reservoir yesterday afternoon and I swear the dipstick is only about 6" long. It only sits in the very top of the reservoir oil to tell you if you are about 1-1/2 quarts low. If you are lower than that, you won't see any oil on the dipstick.

Well i did some investigating of the broken dip stick and here is what i found.
The dip stick hole is mounted in the chassis with a couple bolts so i removed them and a guide tube, about 10" long, is attached to this mount. I put my dip stick into the mount and the broken tip just stuck out. I was wrong with my initial length.
I got one of those flexible magnetic sticks and tried to retreive but no luck. Is there a pan (like on a car) that i could remove and get at it that way? Thanks for suggestions

To recheck what I previously posted, I pulled my dipstick this morning and it is about 14" long. The problem with that dipstick is that it sits just above the rear PTO shaft, only slightly to the right. If you are lucky, it is laying in the bottom of the rear differential/PTO casing. The closest access I can think of is the panel blank where the Mid-PTO is installed. If you drain the hydraulic reservoir and remove either the blank or the mid-PTO (if installed) you might be able to fish out the end of the dipstick.

EDIT: I checked some diagrams and the bottom of the gearbox where the rear PTO sits is isolated from the mid-PTO by a casting. It is NOT possible to fish from the mid-PTO blank. It appears the only way to gain access to this area is by removing the rear PTO shaft or the the complete 3PH hydraulic assy from on top of the differential. The good news is that unless you have a mid-PTO installed, the dipstick probably dropped past the rear PTO shaft and is laying harmlessly in the bottom of the reservoir. I'd be tempted to just leave it and hope for the best.

Thanks Jim.
I am going to take your advise and leave it alone. I have had no problems so i'm not going to create any.
Have a great day and this website/forum is awesome.
