TC40D PTO/Hydro Problem

Well, I'm back in the shop for the second time in 2 weeks after 1 hour of run time. The PTO and drive gave out again. No forward, reverse, 2 or 4 wheel drive, PTO....nothing. I was running a rotary cutter at the time. The first fix involved replacing a broken shaft in the tranny. Now it looks like the same thing again. Has anyone had any problems and solutions for anything similar? Do I have a lemon? I've got 44 hours on the clock.

Wow! Bob. It sounds like you not only have a lemon, but you just might have a whole orchard./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Something has got to be very, very wrong for that to happen to you twice. OUCH! I sure hope you get to the source of the problem soon.

U weren't using that 20' HD Bushhog again?
Sounds like serious trouble, I wonder if
something is wrong back in trans or rearend
causing problems.
Did they check slip clutch on mower?

Hey bobnewjersey,

I had some problems kind of like that with a 35D. I posted the problem "TC35D PTO BRAKE" and resulting lessons about a month ago. Hope that helps.

The rotary cutter was re-adjusted (although I keep it indoors in the barn so the clutch won't rust up) Hoeman00. I do suspect that could be part of the problem. That raises the question of how can you be sure that the clutch is loose enough to engage when it's needed to protect the tranny? Any idea's ?
jlong.....I saw your thread already. I asked the dealer about the slip clutch the first time around and was told I did not need one. I've asked again and was told the same thing again, not needed.
Any lemon laws that cover tractors?
