Well this is the first time I put my tractor to a serious pull test. I have a TC40DA, I bought this tractor over the 33 because I wanted enough power. I was pulling a 10 ft disc over a moldboard plowed field and could only pull in low - low and even than it would bog down occasionly. I really thought this tractor would handle this better.

Anyone else have a similar experience? Is the geared version better than the hydro for this type of pulling?

Am I in danger of pushing the tractors limits? Could I hurt anything in the hydro by doing this?

I thought I would need just 1 tractor on my small farm/ food plots but I think I may need to buy an older pulling tractor. However, I really don't want to maintain and store another tractor.

my 33 is certinaly no pulling power house with its HST trans.

when it came to pulling hard, id rather have a gear trans... id rather listen to that engine bog and watch as the tires dig down finding traction than listen to my engine purrrrrr away and the HST squeel uncle as it goes into bypass

would i trade my HST for a gear trans.... not in a min. my heavy pulling duty equates to about 1% of what i use mine for. and for that other 99% of the time id hate to be stuck with a gear trans.

I would not expect to pull a 10' disc much with a 40 hp HST tractor. The 45 hp tractor that IH3444 linked to is a gear transmission Kioti DK45S. That 10' disc might even be a challenge for it. I'd expect to be able to pull a 6' or 8' disc with your tractor, but only occasionally. Unfortunately, HST tractors don't do draft work as well as their gear counterparts. If you have a lot of plowing to do, I think your idea of a second gear tractor would be a good idea.

Jinman is right on. A HST tractor will not do ground engaging work -- i.e. heavy pulling -- as well as a gear machine. A 10 foot disc is a lot of pull for any 40 hp. tractor, unless you have very light soil. One solution would be to get a smaller disc.

Is your disc a single or double? You could set it at a less aggressive angle so it would pull easier, or set the second gang to run straight and see if that helps.

I agree.. A 10' disc is quite a bit for a 40hp machine.

Also don't forget the hydro's "Dirty little secret".

What? the relief valve with a rather small set of 'nads' ?

agreed: either a bigger tractor with gears or smaller disks.

The picture of the DK pulling a 10' disc does not tell how fast he was pulling or anything else. You can see he was doing a very small garden plot so maybe he didn't need to move fast.

A 10' disc will produce a lot of drag for a 40 horse compact tractor. The only thing I can say that might help is keep the wheels down so that you are only discing a few inches and go at it from there but it is a lot of disc for that size/weight tractor. An 8' transport disc would be better suited but they are very hard to find in good shape and parts are even harder to find.
