I finally got around to installing the 2nd and 3rd remote hydraulic circuit on my TC48...I have have an install question on about the studs that hold the valves on.

The instructions direct you to remove the three bolts from the 1st valve one by one and replace them with the studs supplied with the third circuit kit. You are supposed to double nut the stud to install it. The drawings in the instructions show studs threaded from one end to the other. The studs delivered with both kits (2nd & 3rd) however were only threaded on the ends ....3/8" on one end, 3/4" on the other. I couldn't double nut the 3/8" end so I put that end into the tractor housing. When I tightened it up, the casting was trying to cut threads on the stud, i.e. it wasn't bottoming out in the casting hole. I put the two valves, flat and lock washers on and tightened up the nuts and there is about 3/8" on threaded stud sticking proud of the nut. I sure wish that was in the casting!

So my question is... should I be concerned that there is only 3/8" threaded into the casting? I don't want these ganged valves to loosen up. I guess the nut is only 5/16" so it should have as much holding power on the casting side as the nut side.

thanks for your thoughts

Since the new studs are not threaded in the middle then you should not need to double nut the 3/8" end. Couldn't you just put ONE nut on the 3/8" end and thread down to the unthreaded center area then just put a wrench on nut and tighten. Then back off nut (possibly you would have to hold unthreaded area with needle nose plies to prevent stud from turning as you remove the nut).

Yup...
I guess there were two things that helped keep me from heading in that direction....neither of which make sense when I write them down!
- I didn't think of it as an issue until I had all three valves set in place so there wasn't room to tighten the studs this way.....duh...take unplumb and take off the last valve!
- I didn't want to take a vice-grip to something on hydraulics with the potential for burrs and pieces of metal getting into the system....but these studs are just for holding the valves on, not anything really to do with hydraulics!

Thanks much for clearing out the cobwebs...now if I can just make sure I keep track of all the o-rings, anti-intrusion rings and o-ring covers :)
