Is this something I want to try? My local gas station has "high performance" diesel (49 cetane) - I looked on wikipedia, seems CA and some counties in TX requires it (??) Is this good for my tractor or will I burn it up? I have not looked at the price for it yet. I wouldn't mind paying a little more if I'll actually feel more hp performance...

49 cetane will be good stuff especially if it refined from better crude stock,as opposed to chemical enhancement.
In the Great Lakes region here,Amoco(BP)used to offer "Premier" diesel-50 cetane.
When used in my 6.5 Chevrolet,it started better and had much better throttle response.
At the time-about 2003-it was only 6 cents more per gallon.
Remember-cetane is the opposite of octane.
Higher cetane allows easier ignition and faster burn, while higher octane ignites a little slower with a slower burn.
Not sure if your tractor would see any benefit from it.
Good Luck!

The higher cetane rating will burn cleaner, you will have faster engine starts as well.

I'll run my tank as close to empty as I can and will buy 10 gallons of the 49 cetane and give it a try. I will report back but since I don't use the tractor that much... it might be a little while. Will just be testing it under mowing conditions that I'm used to.

Yes, higher Cetane is always a good thing. Totally different thing than octane in gasoline, which is for anti-knock. Cetane in diesel determines its burn effectiveness. Higher cetane diesel burns cleaner and more efficiently. A big plus especially for the newer emission laden diesels. Whether one can actually get better economy out of it, there are too many variables to make bold claims. As a side note.... European specs require 50 cetane diesel at all pumps. That is their "regular' fuel. Does that say something about what we have available here? I think so.
