Early model YM1700
Ref 1700: tractor has three red lights on dash - TEMP CHG OIL. The charge and oil lights come on when I start the tractor but the temp light doesn't come on at all. Shouldn't it come on when the switch is on and go off when the tractor cranks? How and what can I check for process of elimination to problem? Thanks.

The temp light will only come on when the engine is too hot. To check the light and wiring you will need to unplug the wire from the sender on the engine and touch it to a grounded metal surface or to the battery - terminal. The light should come on. The only way to tell if the sender is functioning is to put it in boiling water and see if it closes the circuit.

Hope this helps,
Aaron

I, as well as many people here have replaced the light with a temp gauge. Sunpro offers a fairly nice gauge. I have a YM2000 and had to use the metric adapter kit, you may have to do the same. Adding the gauge has settled my nerves.

I've gotten so accustomed to gauges I had almost forgotten the term "idiot lights". A gauge is definitely in order for this situation.

callais,

Were you able to use the adaptor that came with the gauge or did you need to buy something else? It is really an uncomfortable feeling knowing the life of your multi-thousand dollar engine can depend on a single bulb working properly.

I had to buy the metric adapter kit, It came with 3 other fittings. The metric fitting I used was also a lower profile to allow the sender to sit lower into the block. The gauges are DEFINITELY the way to go, I was never comfortable waiting for my tractor to get to 265 degrees before a light may or may not come.

If he bought a sunpro gauge he probably also bought the metric pack that is optional for it. At my local stre.. the sunpro gauges are 9.99... and you can buy metric adapters for ?5.99. I havn't specifically looked at the water bulb.. so am wondering how the bushing works.. must be some pretty big adapters...?

Thanks for the thread, this answered my next (and certainly not last) question about my tractor. I would love to see some pictures of these guages installed. My next project is to add guages to my tractor and would like to see how they look installed, and hear any tricks to installing them.

thanks

Sydken,
here are some photos of my gauges installed. First is the dash with Sunpro 1 1/2" gauges...and I left the low oil pressure warning light.

Here is the oil pressure with "T" adapter to allow both the old sender and the new gauge copper line.

I have 1 1/2" gauges, but also bought the metric adapter, "T" adapter and copper line kit from Sunpro. The 90 degree angle and short connector I got at Autopro for a few bucks.

Sorry I do not have a photo of the water temp connector, but it is a simple removal and replacement..but also required Sunpro's metric adapter kit.
