Probably as most of you a s most of you know, we have had a terrible october up here in the BUFFALO , NEW YORK AREA. i was kind of lucky as i was just on the edge of the storm and only got about 8" of snow , but it took down a bunch of my limbs off my maples and of course my willow, has not stopped raining , ground is so wet, and leaves are all over but to wet to try and pick them up, tried today and just got the GT stuck and made a mess out of the yard. i am normally in what they call the snow belt ( we get hit hardest) but for some reason the storm tracked north and we got spared, was only without power for about 12 hours, some were with out power for 12 days.

you guys certainly got hit- hard and early- we had snow here, but not like you- and very few, short power outages.

The whole thing reminded me of this cartoon.

I have seen it snow here 3 days so far this month, including Monday, but nothing sticks. No one and nothing, including trees, were ready for what you got there. But, yeah, at least we don't hurricaines!

The ground is so wet in the Milwaukee area that I cannot get my tractor anywhere near the ground, just sinks in. No snow yet.

Morning Frank.
Hope this isn't a sign of whats ahead for winter this year...rain..rain..each day over here as well, sure glad its not snow...yikes.

Lets keep our fingers cross for another mild winter.

That SNOW sure looks pretty. ;)
Our ground is so wet that even the push mower leaves marks in the lawn. Tried to move our motorhome Sunday. Got it stuck down to the axle in just a few feet. :( The Orange One would not move the 19,000 lbs monster. More holes dug in the lawn. Called AAA. They were out in 30 minutes to winch motorhome out. Spent sometime cleaning up the mess. It will take several hours of seat time to clean up the mess when things finally dry up. :D
Maybe I should head south for the winter.

Frank I'm sorry to hear of your problems. If the power goes out again remember that you always have a warm place here in Ohio to stay.

HI Thomas: think it will be a bad winter, just hope it freezes befor the snow really comes,if we get snow cover the ground won't freeze and all i will do is make a big mess when plowing.:(

It rains almost every day. My ground is so wet I can't mow and I'd like to do that one last time before winter. The friend who is helping me take my barn apart leaves her truck here to save on gas (she's been taking a lot of the wood to another house of hers near me) and I moved it yesterday and it was sunk. Left 2 big ruts that I'll have to level out once it's drier. I moved it to the barn driveway so it won't sink again. It's also been colder than normal.

Frank this am I was up in Alden in Erie Co and it looked like a hurricane blew through. It was nice to see the NYS DOT working at the clean up. They were swarming all over doing limbs.

Every yard and every tree was effected. Some homes took a beating. As I drove back to Batavia it got better pretty quick. But with all the winds coming I don't hold out hope for a quick recovery.

I have a swamp behind my place. It's flooded. This normally happens in the spring but not now. Holy cow. I pulled my tree stand out to hunt elsewhere this fall. Nothing wants to walk through the water except the ducks....

Or to put it another way. Last fall my neighbors pond was 3 feet deep. This year it's full at 12 feet.

Will it get better? I mean the weather man said since Sept 1st we've had 17 inches of rain.

Raining again today, all day, roads are flooded. Tomorrow we are supposed to have 40+mph winds. Wonder what the gusts will be. I already shut and blocked all barn doors.

Hey Frank, hope you guys are getting back to normal up there in Buffalo. I used to live in Toronto and watched all the classic Buffalo blizzards on the local Buffalo stations we could tune in...never saw such a big snowfall that early.

Here's something out of the Cleveland paper that I saw amusing regarding FEMA's response to Buffalo's big snow...

frank,

It is not a terrible fall, it is a fall with toy (tool) buying oppurtunities.

The power outage would be a PITA, so time to get a generator and do a transfer switch for the house, of course it is all for the wife not for you.

With the snow that you have had and WILL get, it would be real good to get a snow blower for your tractor, you want to keep the driveway clear so the wife can drive, easily correct?

Try some of those lines they may or may not work.

don't want a snowblower, find it very difficult to drive backwards and don't want to spend for front blower:D plus i dont like to be without the FEL. did not get snow last night but winds to 60 MPH lost more of the willow, in the last 2 years have lost at least 50 % of that willow, won't have to take it down as there ain't much left:) very dirty tree!!! i will attach a few photos of what i lost last night (if i can firgure out how to do it)

Morning Frank.
Now that's what I call willow...yikes.
Willows can be demanding trees if one likes clean looking lawn...I had sixteen 1/4 size of yours and pull the stumps out also, now its smooth mowing and after wind storm of any sort no more branches to pick up....Willows are nice looking tree, but on someone elses land tho.

Get rid of that willow as soon as you can. I had one doing that right next to my house. Fun part is that it was between the house and the power line coming in. The first branch that came down went through a window into my front room. The second one fell with no wind or storms into my driveway (a neighbor had been parked under it just a few minutes before!). The third large branch like your tree has landed on the roof. It didn't damage it, but it wasn't any fun being on top of a tall 2 story house with a steep roof using a chainsaw. At that point I decided it had to go. There wasn't much left but the trunk anyway. I was afraid to cut it with it right next to the house and power line, and it was leaning toward the house. I don't think I'd recommend this method, but I chained it to my truck and decided to pull it down, so I could put it where I wanted it. This tree was so rotten that despite about a 1.5-2 foot diameter, the chain ripped through it. The top third of the tree went flying through the air, bounced off the power line and landed in the driveway. Ok, somehow the power line survived this. So I chain it up again and have a repeat, without hitting the power line this time. The third time sawed off most of the bottom third. But if I could "cut down" a tree this big with a chain and a Ford F250, that can give you a good picture of how rotten these trees get, and how dangerous. I was pretty sure it was rotten enough that I could pull it down, but I didn't anticipate the chain ripping through it. I'd get rid of it as soon as possible before it hurts someone.

This willow just split in half on a windless day. Simple old age and rot. I am glad it was not near any buildings. It took two guys with chain saws about 3 hours to cut it up. I was one of the two guys. I understand why folks who cut up trees charge so much. I am glad it fell down on it's own. Cutting it down would have killed me :D
