I took a drive to Belle Plaine Minnesota to look at the new 4720. I was impressed. The tractor didn't have the 400X loader.
Parked right next to a 4320 was a nearly new 4710 and it gave me a chance to compare the two. You sit quite a bit higher on the 20 series although the downward slope of the hood doesn't seem as noticeable.
I haven't been on a John Deere in couple of years but I was really impressed with how smooth the shifting between ranges is. I don't know if this is an improvement with the twenty series or if the ten series also were smooth. My previous 4300, 4400 and 4600 were not as smooth. This is also the first time I operated a Deere with the E-hydro. The pedal resistance is quite pleasant and much easier than my NewHolland.
The tractor has a very "manly" sound to it especially at start up. It has quite a cackle when it starts.
The tractor doesn't turn as short as my NewHolland with the Supersteer but it still pretty good. The advantage of the Deere is that it doesn't have the Supersteer quirk where the front of the tractor moves a few inches in the opposite direction of the way you turn.
The fuel tank location that has been discussed does seem a little odd. The little cover that flips up looks nice and probably will be ok if the operator uses a fuel storage tank with a hose to fill. Those of us who use 6 gallon containers probably will be spilling fuel on the dash.
I knew this would happen. I asked the salesman (a very pleasant fellow) to give me a price on a trade of the TC40DA. It is a 2004 model with 32 hours so I'm not real optimistic that something can be done. But we will see.
Others may disagree but I like the new look although there is nothing wrong with the ten series styling.
I think JD has a winner here. Up to 50 pto horsepower with a hydro shoud sell a few tractors. I, for one, was impressed but would have to see the new loader in action for a final decision. But if the salesman comes back with a price that I can't refuse I might to switch colors again.
