Fence to go around our house. 2 7/8 used oil field pipe (drill stem). Hope you enjoy. Have a good 2021.

Is there supposed to be a picture there? Must be coming from "off-site". Bad mojo for that.

And you guys call your browser secure.

Back on topic; That's the way it's done around here. Drillers pipe can be had for scrap value. I wouldn't use it around the whole place but I've seen it used at the front line, entrance or live stock pens. The real stuff is about 3/16" thick and good hard steel. It is NOT cheap water pipe grade.

Nice fence. Nice touch making top rail joints at posts. Was there a string when posts were being driven or is the guy eyeballing alinghment? The bottom rail is lower than most,is there a reason?

Awesome thanks for posting!

Can't imagine what that would cost in just materials around here. And then there is the glacial till we. have that would make driving them pretty much futile unless you have some serious load behind it to press grapefruit and bigger rocks out of the way.

string was run at the bottom between corner posts
I made the fence level, so it looks parallel to the roofline of the house, instead of following the land contour. It becomes a more normal height at the ends where the land slopes away.

40 feet of clay and then 2000 feet of solid rock here.

a good check for used oilfield pipe is to make sure its not too radioactive. fyi. it depends on what it was used for. 2 7/8 and 2 3/8 tubing is used on workover rigs and for production tubing, not for drilling wells. the stuff used for production tubing for a long time in a well is pulled when the well is plugged and abandoned, this is the stuff that can be radioactive from years of radioactive isotopes flowing up the pipe and depositing as scale. I have had scale samples that were pretty off the charts. enough that we had to get special transport to send them to a lab.
