Don't know where this one originated, but it does seem appropriate.

TEXAS PRAYER
Bless this house, oh Lord, we cry, Please keep it cool in mid-July.
Bless the walls where termites dine, While ants and roaches march in time.
Bless our yard where spiders pass, Fire ant castles in the grass.
Bless the garage, a home to please Carpenter beetles, ticks and fleas.
Bless the love bugs, two by two, The gnats and mosquitoes that feed on you.
Millions of creatures that fly or crawl, In Texas, Lord, you've put them all!
But this is home, and here we'll stay, So thank you Lord for
INSECT SPRAY!!!

An old man had this above his fireplace. It was in Maine.

If its warmth that you desire
Poke your wife and not the fire
If its fun you want from life, poke some other fellas wife
Poke his or poke your own, but leave the god damm fire alone

kubmech, you have my sympathy then./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I've passed through some parts of S. Carolina a few times, but never at this time of year and was never there long enough to notice bugs, except maybe on the windshield./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Bird,

When I used to travel back to central Texas when my family lived there, I commented more than once that I picked up more windshield splatters in McClendon & Coryell counties than I did the rest of the trip [from New Orleans]. Of course, there's no control there for time of day - - maybe it was dusk or dark when I got that far down the trail and it was time of day that increase the frequency of splats - - - or maybe it was geography.

Grasshoppers still bugging you?

Tdog, we still have quite a few grasshoppers around all right, but I guess they're no problem (for me personally) anymore since I've plowed the garden under and the grass is either dead or dormant from lack of water./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif The farmers have been harvesting the corn, milo, etc. and I understand they've suffered a lot of damage from the grasshoppers. And I haven't talked to anyone who really knows, but I've noticed they're grinding up more silage than I've ever seen before. Don't know whether it's because the stuff was unfit for other use or whether it was planned and planted for that purpose.

Bird,

It's a shame that you're still not getting any rain, although my memories of Texas in August are mostly in brown. Not much green except where people water their lawns.

Here in SE Louisiana we've gotten back to a more normal summer weather pattern here. I just checked out the 'drought monitor' [http://enso.unl.edu/monitor/monitor.html] & I see where most of Texas in in some form of an official drought condition, although you probably don't need a map to tell. Back in March-April I was bellyaching about another dry year, but since then we've been getting some good rains. And central Florida was really impacted earlier this summer, but has been chalking up some pretty good rains, & is mostly out of drought conditions.

Hope it rains for you soon.
