I have had satellite internet for 5 years, Hughes and Wild Blue.
I just tried the Verizon MI-FI and it is great!

Thanks to all.

Glad it's working well for you :)

We are 40 miles from the nearest 3G so that's not an option :( I was in an area with AT&T 3G the other day and the speeds were only 30% faster than Hughes satellite.

There are a lot of backbone upgrades that need to be done, along with coverage expansion. I'm not holding my breath.

I just read a report where the FCC said that 60% of the "broadband" coverage in this country does not meet the FCC definition in terms of speed. The U.S. is far behind most developed countries.

We just moved into a newer century out my way too. My brother has Hughes and I didn't ever find it to be that fast. At Thanksgiving my BIL had his 3G phone here and it worked great - there was an article that said Verizon had added a tower and some antennas recently to get greater coverage. SO, hoping to do something after the new year to get rid of this s - l - o -w dialup.

Only a comment that crossed my mind and I too am in a similar situation... $12,000+ price from Com-Cast to get Internet or Sat Service which took 9 site visits and $1,200 in tree work to get up and running.

I was in Austria in 1999 and the country was spending a fortune laying fiber optic high speed to every little town, village and hamlet... with the goal that 98% of the country would have access. It was all done underground using street and highway right of ways...

I mentioned this to one of the Computer whiz Docs I worked with at the time and was surprised when he said Europe is so far ahead of us... because they just get things done...

I was surprised because he is extremely free market with little regard to centralized planning...

Guess everything has a place and time?

I think Austria succeeded... I was in a little Alpine hut high up on a mountain top a few months ago and the Internet was fantastic... fiber-optic cable

Just inquired about Comcast to my home, they said it was in the region of $200,000. I don't think I'm going to get that installed.

The difference between taxes here and taxes in Europe, there they are used for something, here, we have no idea and just see waste.

My understanding is that the FCC limits dial up to 56K not the technology.
Verizon plans to have a 4G system complete in 2013 that will be 10X faster than 4G.

I am on the Verizon Fivespot today and it is just as fast and about the same cost as DSL. The Fivespot replaced the air card that did not come back with a staff member from a road trip.

The loss of the air card that was 5+ years old was a good thing. The Fivespot is part of our disaster recovery plan so now if Verizon is up we can have up to 5 computers connected to the internet. It is also good for tradeshows where you want to show web services bi-directional features.

Where one can get cell service (more places than any other carrier) the Verizon option works well from our experience over the last 5+ years. Speed and costs should keep increasing. :D

It's a new year and I indeed did get the Verizon Fivespot. After living in N. VA and having cable which was fast, I was bummed when I moved rural and backwards to dialup. The Fivespot has done great except for a snow/ice storm we had and it kept coming in and out so I just turned if off. I figured it was from all the atmospheric junk outside but the next morning it was up and running fast again. Love it.

I like my Verizon MI-FI, considering going to the 10g plan though. I have gone over my 5g a few times..
