Tractor
B7800 & Ym240
Many Thanks to all of you guys that nursed me along with my Ym240 project. The Tractor has my Bearcat 554 chipper on it, and the two together take care of alot of work! If anyone tackles a similar project, and wants to know a novices experiences, I'll try to add my two cents. Thanks again, jbrd

I'm glad to hear it is all back together and running great.

What did it take to get the cylinder sleeves out? After the struggle I had getting injectors out, I would be afraid to tackle sleeves.

And if you don't mind, what should an overhaul like that cost?

To get the sleeves out I made my own puller out of 3/4" threaded rod with a piece of 5/8" x 2 1/2" spring steel cut to the size of the sleeve for the bottom, and two pieces of 3/16" x 1 1/2" flat stock welded together for the top with holes drilled for the threaded rod and the stud rests. LOTS of wd40 & PB blaster soaking, I cranked down on the threaded nut until the top bars would flex then get under the tractor and BEAT on the bottom plate until the top plate was straight, then turn the top bars over, etc, After my first half a dozen trips doing this I did get some dry ice and pack the sleeves with it and that did make the first and the remaining cylinder go a little easier. The pistons with rings (OEM) and the sleeves ran right at $500.00. So add the head gasket, and other necessary gaskets, rod bearings and bushings as needed for a pretty good idea. One very important thing from my experience is when you have the head done use OEM valve springs. I broke two intake springs the first time I put it back together after running it for approximately 4 hrs. One question for you- Which Power Service do you use in your 240? I've been using the white bottle. Thanks, jbrd

Thanks for the reply. That's pretty reasonable for OEM parts.

It sounds like getting those sleeves out was a hassle.

Power Service: It never gets cold enough here to gel diesel so I use PS Silver Bottle. It is labeled 6 Cetane points and no anti-gel, while the white bottle says 3 points plus anti-gel. This reduces the clanking. I think the extra Cetane brings the fuel up to spec for what the designers intended.

I use the grey/silver bottle as well for the 6 points to help the deisel knock sound as well. Maybe i noticed it a little but i thiught it was mind over matter? We were Into the teens for several mournings straight and below freezing for like 3 days here in upstate SC and my deisel did not even start to look gelled or gell. Thank goodness. Where i buy they must have had a decent winter mix. MY tractor sits under a carport but open to the air so it was not in a warmed shed oranything. This is during a time period where i had some of my loggers have gelled filters and some that took 30 mins to crank some of the equiptment, some were using blowtorches to heat filters up. All this time my yanmar cranked up, be it a little slower to jump to life but still started.

Like I had mentioned awhile ago this tractors serial number is 00202 so those sleeves had been in there a long time, plus I don't know how long it had been sitting before it was moved on to my property. I'll try the silver bottle next, the tractor doesn't seem as loud (hammer noise) as when I first got it started, but that might just be my bad ears and wishful thinking. We're at 4100 ft., so we get snow, not like the Sierras, but we get our fair share. It will be under cover, but not in a garage or barn, so this winter will be a good weather test, I don't have the thermostart , California, you mentioned awhile back the thermostart was pretty easy to install, so I might give that a shot. jbrd

Suggestion - get the later model thermostart reservoir that refills itself from the injector return line.

That is more convenient than the original one where you have to pour in 2 oz of diesel from a 5 gallon jug.
