I have e-mailed that photo of the farmer pulling the early model Gehl chopper with the Case model VC tractor to a few friends who appreciated seeing it as much as I did when it was first posted. Not only did we learn something about the history of the J I Case tractor family, but at the same time we took a stroll down memory lane. Interestingly, here in the Midwest everything seems to be PTO driven whereas on the west coast where I grew up farmin', we had auxillary engines on EVERYTHING, choppers, balers, you name it. In CA, our big tractor power was all on tracks so we did not have beefy wheel tractors that could handle a PTO baler or chopper. We just used wheel tractors for piddling around, pulling a hay rake, and maybe cultivating a few vegetables. When you needed to get some real work done you just hopped up on the left track of that D-7, cranked up the starting engine, rolled that big four-cylinder diesel engine over till it fired, and rumbled off to do some tractor work.
