Tractor
looking to buy
Never owned a tractor before! I have 4-5 acres of land mostly cleared. I am looking for a tractor to do general work like dig drenches, dig for pond, clear some stumps! I was looking at the above tractors BX25D & CS2410. Somebody here suggest LS2023 which is around $5000.00 more. I spoke to the LS2023 dealer and was told there is no comparison. The LS2023 can lift much more than the others therefore a heavier tractor!

I am now wondering if I will be making a mistake for buying the little tractor(this is how the J2023 dealer spoke about the other tractors). Will I be wishing I had moved up to either the J2023 or the Kioti 2510. The Kioti dealer stated three people traded in there CS 2410, while it did the job, it was not the performance the expected!

Know I am confused!

I can't say enough good things about the BX TLB but, it does have it's limitations.

A couple of thoughts.

Low Ground Clearance and Hydro Fan can be vulnerable out in the brush.

Small Tires simply do not handle rough terrain as well as larger tires.

On the plus side it can get places a larger tractor simply can't and is very economical to operate and is easy to store because it doesn't require much space.

IMPO, neither of those smaller tractors is suited to digging stumps, or a pond. Stumps are one of the most equipment breaking tasks on earth, depending on size of same. Pond digging is a huge task and requires substantial lifting power and significant ballast, again depending on size/terrain on site. Both tasks are better suited to an excavator. Talk to neighbors/friends who already own tractors and who may know your land to get a better idea about what you need/require, and whether you should hire out the work and use a smaller tractor to do more suited to capacity tasks.

You are going to find so many that say the little machines are not really good at.....well anything. And I think that is likely true. (I own a BX25D and LOVE it) However, you will also find that there is very little that the little machine can not do....they will just do it a little slower.

All I have used my machine for is digging up stumps, digging out trees, and moving dirt in general. (look at my day in the life thread in the Kubota section to pimp myself just a bit)

The only thing I do not care for the Kubota BX25D for is mowing. (first let me say that some men put some metal in me that I did not come standard with, so I am not your typical user of the machine) I find it pretty darn bumpy when I do mowing, I have an older JD650 (a 1980's sub compact tractor I would guess) and with its longer wheel base it is much more friendly for me to mow on.

As to moving and digging a pond, you bet you can do it. I had started to dig back out my pond with it, but all this rain has made it fill with water again so that project is on hold so I can't comment too much on that. All I really did was make a quick trip into the pond pick up some downed trees with the grapple and come back out again. No real digging but I really don't see why I could not.

Digging up trees and cut down trees is what I have been doing...I think the biggest I have done so far is about 18" perhaps a little more, as the bar on my saw is 18 and it was the first one we dug up. The wife dug, I dug, my son dug....first day we had the tractor....it took us 2 days, but don't let that be your guide. We had no idea how to run a backhoe and we just had fun. I would bet now I could get that tree up in a few hours....it was about 5' deep at the end. The little thing is really a digging machine.

Only you can really know if the "little tractors" are going to do it for you....but one thing is sure as sunshine just about everyone will tell you to upsize, and better too big then too small....and they are right....unless you need to get into little spots, or really think you just are not going to need it.

What I would say look around, Look on youtube and see what people are doing with the little tractors, does that look like what you want to do, or does it look like you are going to need more. The next step up in machines is not THAT much more expensive....sometime things like the backhoe gets much more expensive next step up, but the machine itself is really not much more.

Personally I have used the crap out of my BX, some think I will "wear it out" I am not quite sure what that means....it really is just a pump on wheels, I guess I could damage arms, or something...not sure how, but I think just about everything can be rebuilt.

People like yourself are one reason I am trying to document all the work I am doing with the machine....to show just what it can do and what it can't and any issues over the long haul. There are other folks on here 4shorts has made changes to his machine that make it into just a total jack of all trades....some of the things he has done is just amazing...check his stuff out as well. My log, and I am going to try to start doing video logs as well, are more of the work related....what I am doing with the machine, his are mostly the changes and mods, upgrades he does...he also has some very nice work videos too.

I think you will be hard pressed to find someone that does not like their BX, 1 series...or other machine in that class. But that does not mean it can do everything....nothing can do everything.

Do your research....it took me over 6 months of reading and research to pay my money. I could not be more happy with the product that I have.

Man I was wordy.....anyway, wanted to suggest a few other things to look at.

Check out the Mahendra max series of machines, as well as JD 1 Series, Massey GC, all for new. They are all ABOUT the same as the BX....and all are just a tad different.

Try to check out a farm show if you can...it is a great place to see them all in one spot. Then have fun, and keep us updated.

No my friend you are not to wordy. Would prefer wordy than no words at all. This is a huge investment and would like to do it right the first time!

If lifting power is important to you, then make sure your shopping choice reflects it. If we're only talking 100 lbs or so, no big deal... but if we're talking several hundred or more, than it's worth looking into. Also factor in hydraulic flow, as it relates to the speed at which your hydraulics operate (ie loader, backhoe, etc). A heavier machine is better suited for digging and pulling, as it means more ballast & traction. However, a lighter machine is preferable for mowing.

Yes you can dig a pond. Lookup "digging a pond with Kioti CK20" on YouTube.

Any of the tractors mentioned will be good. Some will be better suited to specific tasks than others. Some may come with better features. Some may be more comfortable (to you) than the others.

I've personally owned Kioti, LS, and now Massey. From a reliability perspective, my personal experience, as of this point, the Massey has been the best, then LS, then Kioti. But, all of the tractors nowadays are good enough that you can let needs and personal preference decide.

Stick with Kubota and look at the B2620. Very capable machine in a small package.

Why? What is it that sets this tractor apart from the others? It isn't as capable as most of the competition. The warranty isn't as good. The features are lacking.

???

First of all Harlee22 as a fellow Newfoundlander I'd like to welcome you to the site. There's a wealth of information on here that will keep you going in reading meterial for years to come. I personally have a Kubota BX25D along with a Kubota GL5740 and to tell the truth enjoy both tractors but just love the BX. It's xceeded all my expectations and I'm using it basically for the same reasons that you need one for.

I don't need to add much extra to my experiences with the BX because Cherokee140 gave what I would call an extremely honest summary of the BX25D and has posted many times on how much he enjoys his machine and what it can do. Like Cherokee140 I don't use my BX for mowing. I use a Kubota ZTR for that. You can click on my YouTube like below and see videos of our BX in action. I doubt you'll find anyone that owns a BX saying they don't like there machine. Good luck with your tractor quest.
Cheers. Paul in Bay Roberts

Cherokee140 thank you very much on your kind words about my mods on our tractor. Much appreciated.
