The \"best\" State Fair???

Have been to Missouri State Fair a few times - Diane has been to the Illinois Fair. Want to check out some other ones this year. So . . . anyone been to different ones?

Am mainly interested in good machinery exhibits, lots of animal judging and similar, i.e. good "working" fairs. Am less interested in the "entertainment" issues. I have heard that Iowa has an excellent fair (remember the movie State Fair from the 1940s? - "Our state fair is the best state fair in the whole state").

So . . . folks, any suggestions? Also, interested in extensive museum exhibits relating to agriculture and machinery. Have visited the Warp museum in Minden, NE. Budgeted 2 days, ended up spending 4 days and could have spent a month. Does anyone who's been there know of anything better in the US (more extensive)?

Try the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington D.C. They have some real nice ag and old machinery exhibits. You won't spend days there looking at it but it nevertheless takes one down memory lane and reading up on all the history emits good feelings for how this country developed during the industrial revolution.

Haven't been to the State Fair of Texas the last few years, but you can read more about it at State Fair of Texas.

Rich history of agriculture and machinery "hill" at the Minnesota State Fair. Runs 10 days the last week of August to Labor day.

I really enjoyed the American History Museum, it was awesome. I have to agree Bob, if you want to see some old memorabilia, the Smithsonians are fantastic. Just plan on splitting up with your partner and meeting somewhere later, its to hard to go through the exhibits with someone else, going at their speed. I checked out every plaque at every exhibit, others skim through. One whole day for the Air & Space, one whole day for the American History and 2 whole days for the Natural History are the minimums for me. They are also "free" to enter. Be sure to go under the Lincoln Memorial and see the display there as well. Spectacular, awesome, incredible, everyone should go to DC and see the Mall at least once in their life.

P.S. I was there when the Lewinsky story broke out and it added to the excitement of being in Washington.

I second the Ohio State Fair. Lots of animal exhibits and judging.

I have been to 2 state fairs WVa and Ohio,I like the WVa state fair,it is small in comparison to the Ohio state fair,Lewisburg WVa near the Greenbrier Resort is where the WVa fair is,but the Ohio State fair is closer to me and is an excellent fair,I have not been up to it for a few years, but it is awesome,so much to do. The Ohio State fair is really fun.

Yep....I've been to all these Museums as well RaT. I'd have to agree the Smithsonian Museums are some of the best free attractions in all of America for anyone who hasn't been there. I also hope you also caught the Holocaust Museum. This was a very sobering experience for me. I was only able to spend about 4-5 hours there but could have spent a couple days. There were some exhibits I could have stood in front of for an hour or so just pondering on mankind's inhumanity to their fellow man. It's just inconceivable.......... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
